Researching MAY from Plymouth area, Devon, UK

I have so far got back to William May born c1838 either in Stoke or Bickleigh near Plymouth. He married Harriet Warren, who was born at Devonport, in 1875 at Stoke Damerel register office.

William was in the Navy, in the 1871 census his occupation was Sailor RN. On his marriage certificate in 1875 he is noted as a seaman and on the baptism record for his first daughter, Harriet Winifred, in 1876 he was a cook at the Royal Naval Hospital at Devonport.

William died between 1881-1886 as in 1886 Harriet married again.

On William & Harriet's wedding certificate his father is given as John May, a rope maker at HM Dock Yard. Unfortunately there are several John Mays so I'm not sure which belongs to William yet.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to trace where one of their daughters, Harriet Winifred, was from after 1881 until 1908 when she got married at Brixham to William Cockram who lived at Morebath. I've no idea how Harriet and William met as Morebath is North Devon and Brixham is South Devon!

Half brother/sister marriage?

Richard Cockram b1829 West Anstey, Devon married Sarah Tout in 1857 at Hawkridge, Somerset. I have found 2 children, Jane b1859 at Hawkridge and Hannah b1860 at North Molton.

Richard's brother William married Sarah's sister Betsey Tout in 1862.

I'm assuming Sarah died shortly after giving birth to Hannah, as Richard married again in 1862 to Ann Baker. I haven't been able to find a death date for her yet. Richard and Ann had 5 children together, the second one called Richard and born c1862 at West Anstey.

In 1884 Richard Cockram b1862 married a Hannah Tout born c1861 North Molton at Neath, Glamorgan.

The problem I have is: I have found census records in 1861 & 1871 and also baptism record for Hannah COCKRAM b1860, but no records for Hannah TOUT in those years and no baptism for Tout in North Molton.

Do you think that as Hannah Cockram lived with her grandfather, James Tout she assumed he was her father? On the marriage certificate her father is given as James Tout deceased, carpenter. They could have met as Hannah's aunt Betsey married into the Cockram family?

Or, do you think they knew they were related, as they married at the register office in Neath while Richard's father was living at Llangeinor?

Cudmore in Devon, UK

I have researched back to William Cudmore born 1736 George Nympton. He married Joan Hunt in 1761 and they had 5 children baptised at George Nympton: William, John, Richard, Grace and Mary. It was noted on the children's baptism records: "William Hellings alias Cudmore"

My husband's grandfather descends from Richard who was born 1767. He married Elizabeth Williams in 1795 at Dolton. Most of the family then stayed in the Dolton area.

If you have any information on/connection with Cudmores in the Dolton, Dowland, Merton and Ashreigney areas I would be interested to hear from you.

Researching Werring in Cornwall, UK

I have managed to get back to William Werring born circa 1789 at St Stephens by Launceston. Struggling to find a baptism for him though.

Research is made harder by the different spellings - I have found relatives under Waring, Warring, Warren, Werrin, Werren, to name a few.

The family stayed mainly around Launceston and South Petherwin.

If anyone has any information on Werrings (or similar spelling) I would love to hear from you.

Researching Piper in Devon, UK

Most of the Pipers I have researched came from Iddesleigh, then moving to Dowland and surrounding villages and a branch moving to Brixham.

I have managed to get back to John Piper born circa 1778 married to Elizabeth Brook at Iddesleigh.

If you are researching Pipers in Devon I would love to hear from you.
