S. Entwistle, recorded a verdict that the deceased died from a fracture of the skull caused through a fall from a farm tractor being operated by his father, Gordon James Vagg. The child was sitting on the back of the tractor, which was a made from an old car, when he lost his balance and fell to the ground. * William was had come to NZ from England as a 20 year old in about 1874. At the time of his marriage he was a gardener, but he also spent time as a butcher and cab driver and was declared bankrupt before becoming the Caretaker at Christ’s College Christchurch. William and Annie moved into the Caretakers Cottage on the cricket ground in 1886. In 1912 they moved their family into a cottage on the College grounds, near the riverbank. the Caretaker of Christ's College, Christchurch. While he was at College he did everything from filling up coal buckets and keeping fires going in the classrooms, growing flowers, tending to his horses, helping to build snowmen, building a bonfire when the news of the relief of Ladysmith reached Christchurch and making tea for the Corsair Bay picnics. He also mowed the football and cricket grounds. Indeed all of the known photographs of William Vagg show him tackling grass in one form or another. Annie Vagg died in 1917 and William Vagg died in Nov 1918 as a result of the flu pandemic (while 458 people, or 4.9% of the Christchurch population died, Christ’s College had only one death, that of William Vagg the caretaker). His obituary in the Christ’s College Register of Dec 1918 suggests that he survived the first bout, but succumbed when he contracted it for the second time. He and Annie are buried in the Linwood Cemetery. In 1919 the Christ’s College Old Boys’ Association, with the permission of the Board ensured his permanent memorial in the place he worked for thirty-two years. BARTLETT-VAGG. IVORY LACE GOWN. The marriage was solemnised at Bethany hall, Cambridge, recently, of Gladys Pearl, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs C. Vagg, of French Pass, Cambridge and Jack Frederick Bartlett, of Fencourt, Cambridge. Mr Kimber performed the ceremony and Mrs Catherine Vagg(sister-in-law) played the wedding music. The hall had been prettily decorated with flowers in autumn tonings by friends of the bride. The bride, who entered the hall with her father, wore an ivory lace gown mounted on satin. The bodice was designed with a tucked yoke of georgette and a heart-shaped neckline. The sleeves were full at the shoulder and tapered to points over the hands. The long train was finished with two georgette ruffles. Her long veil of tulle, which fell from a halo of orange blossom, completely enveloped her gown and she carried a sheath of white chrysanthemums and maidenhair fern.
Full-skirted frocks of peach georgette were worn by the bridesmaids, Miss Ruth Vagg, the bride's sister and Miss Ethel Snell of Morrinsville. Miss Margaret Harvey, of Te Awamutu, niece of the bride, as flower-girl, wore blue spotted met over satin. All three frocks were fashioned alike with large bows of net at the back waistline, full puff sleeves of net and a georgette ruffle to finish the neck and hemline. Their head-dresses were of pleated net in halo fashion and the pom-pom dahlias in their bouquets toned in with the colour of their frocks.
Mr Frank Wix attended the bridegroom as best and and Mr George Bartlett, the bridegroom's brother, was groomsman. Messrs Gordon and Arthur Vagg acted as ushers.
Streamers and flowers in autumn tonings decorated the Parish hall, where the reception was held. Mrs C. Vagg received the guests in an ensemble of violet woollen crepe, with matching peach-bloom hat and plumes. Mrs Byrne, aunt of the bridegroom, who assisted, wore a teal suit with matching accessories and furs. The both carried bouquets in the tonings of their frocks. When Mr and Mrs J. F.
