hi Tonkin,

some info for child 11, George Frederick Brunsdon Carwardine, which you might like to add

He served in WWI with the 24th Battalion (Infantry), embarking from Melbourne on 8 February 1916 on the HMAT Warilda. He was killed in action, 2 August 1916 in France aged 28

child 1, Henry Thorpe 'Harry' Carwardine, was born in Dunolly and was involved in his father's business, (as were his brothers), the well-known soap manufacturers of the Bendigo Soap and Candle Works on Back Creek (first established in Dunolly in the 1850s)

Thanks ngairedith.

A few hours of searching the records today provided a few more details for an update and hope the extra details will assist our CARWARDINE researchers.

Intersting what you say about the Bendigo Soap and Candle works.

Cheers.

thanks for that tonkin,

I will link this now to a large ANZAC project that will (hopefully) be finished by this Thursday (Anzac Day). George Frederick Brunsdon Carwardine will feature in it, as will his family via your journal

Hi Tonkin, I'm looking to connect with Carwardine family researchers.

I recently uncovered that Henry Thorpe Carwardine was the father of my ancestor, an illegitimate child born in 1885. HT Carwardine was not recorded on the birth certificates but was taken to court, as referenced in the Bendigo Advertiser here:
THE BENDIGO ADVERTISER (1889, March 29). Bendigo Advertiser (Vic. : 1855 - 1918), p. 2. Retrieved February 26, 2017, from http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article88584850

and here:
CITY POLICE COURT. (1889, April 2). Bendigo Advertiser (Vic. : 1855 - 1918), p. 4. Retrieved February 26, 2017, from http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article88584983

The child's middle name was Carwardine, a clue to his parentage.

There does not seem to be any acknowledgement of this child's existence through the records. Uncannily, a photo of the child once grown to a young man during the WW1 era, he looks just like George Frederick Carwardine, a photo of George appearing in the Bendigo Advertiser at the start of the war.

Photos of WH Carwardine, Sons and Grandsons, here:
AN OLD BENDIGONIAN (1916, August 10). Bendigonian (Bendigo, Vic. : 1914 - 1918), p. 2. Retrieved March 13, 2017, from http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article91383830

I know illegitimate children are quite a scandal even to current generations, but this will hopefully be of interested to genealogists. I welcome contact from any researchers of this family.
