Whipple/Whippo

Journal by AJLF

James Whipple, changed to Whippo, b. 1667, in Barnstable, Mass. Decendant Mary said to have "Indian blood" or "Indian ways about her" by family legend. She was born in Hagerstown, MD to James' grandson, George, and his wife Sussanna Osborn. Any family links, especially with anything to substantiate the Native American legend, would be helpful. I would also like to find James' parents, et. al.

Dear AJLF, Hi there. Click on WHIPPLE, I found an actual website for your surname. Maybe if you contact them direct they might have details on your ancestor/s.

Check out the links in the surname wiki page.

Good luck, Al.

Thanks AJ, let me know how you get on. My genealogy is at a standstill at the moment, so I've been on here doing my 'good fairy' bit helping others. Alison.

I have looked many times for Mary Whippo and an Indian connection. My mother-in-law left a very detailed family history (without any internet help) and her records state that Mary Whippo was part Indian. Nearly every fact she had written down has been proved by my internet search.

My husband's family connection is through Mary Whippo and her husband John Rowles and their son Harmon Fagen Rowles.

I would love to know if you have found any other information.

I have since found that "my" George Whippo is not the George Whippo decended from James @ Barnstable, Mass. The George in my tree came to PA from England in 1721 indentured to a Mr. Taylor. He was a Quaker.

I am a descendant of John Rowles, who married both Mary Whippo and after Marys death married her sister Lydia Whippo. My uncle (Merville Rowles) did an extensive family tree pedigree chart (prior to the time of internet). Merville was the brother of my grandmother Laura Renonia Rowles. One of her two sons (Russell) is my father. My Uncle Merville was a scout master and had a good "oral history" as well as doing his own investigation regarding ancestry of Rowles. His conclusion about Mary Whippo (and her sister Lydia, who was the mother of Titus Harry Rowles of our line) was that they were "Indian" -but the handwritten pedigree chart I have falls short of actual documentation. None-the-less (through the oral history, and his understanding of the region) he believed and wrote that they may have been Mohawk, (Delaware Nation); though I have not been able to find more than comments posted by others concerning the two sisters (arguing whether they were 1/2 of full blooded) being indians, all information on the parts of the charts he completed appears to be accurate and in-keeping with modern search abilities. I am confused as to why my uncle could not find the birth records of Mary and Lydia (if there were any). I am further confused by finding that the (George Whippo) surname Whippo may have been pka Whipple. A George Whippo is said to be the father of Mary and Lydia. There seemed to have been a variety of George Whippos, and a book called called "The Story of George Whippo" also has confusing errors, because by looking at the dates the author (though not admitting so) must have been talking about more than ONE George Whippo while compiling a book that proclaims to speak of one. I have found inaccuracies in that book.
