Hi Tonkin
Thanks it looks like it.
I will look into it

BIRTH.

Name: Elizabeth SCHAFER.
Born: 1872 Sale, Victoria.

This will be Elizabeth's birth but have not located anything to confirm if it's the same Elizabeth married to William WILSON.

No birth recorded for William WILSON circa 1880 in the Victorian records. Birth may not have been registered.

I cannot even find a marriage registration in WA

OBITUARY
MR WILLIAM SCHAFER
PASSES.
It is with deep regret that we have
to chronicle the death of another fine
old colonist in the person of Mr Wil-
liam Scfafer.,who died at his residence,
Rosodale, on Tuesday last. Mr Schafer
had not been well of late, and on Tues-
day he took a very bad turn and passed
away, an affection of the heart being
the cause of death. He did not go to
bed (says the "Courier") but died prac-
tically on his feet.
The late Mr Schafer was born in Ger-
many 82 years ago. At the age of 14
years he left home and went to London,
where he lived for seven years, and
where he learnt his trade of a baker.
In those days he was in receipt of from
15/ to 20/ per week, out of which he had
to keep himself, and there were no
eight hour working days-oftenn he had
to work 24 hours in one shift. Sixty
one years ago he landed at Port Albert,
and carried his sawag into Sale, where he
got a jab at a brickyard, and later went
to work for Mr Christensen (a baker),
and afterrwards was employed by Mr
Hannah, who had a bakery business, the
same business now being carried on by
Burgess and Holding in Raymond street.
On the death of Mr Hannah. the late
Mr Schafer took over the business, and
for a time had a hard struggle-he used
to shut his shop and deliver his bread in
a wheelbarrow. However, he eventually
won through, and for many years was
recognised as the leading baker, until he
leased his business for five year. and
embarked on a trip round the world.
On his return the the-leasee (a Mr Bishop)
purchased the business from him: He
then came to Rosedale, and built the
presant shop on a site of one previously
destroyed by fire. That was over 80
years ago.
The late Mr Schafer, with Mr Jensen
of Sale, were probably the two oldest
business men in Gippeland. Mr Schafer
was a fine character, and noted for his
uprightness and honesty both in business
and private life. He was a kindly man
and it is said that he never refused a loaf
of bread to the hungry or give assistance
to any charitable insltitution or worthy
object ; he has been a subsriber to the
Gippsland Hospital since its foundation.
His wife pre-deceased him by 40 years.
He leaves a sorrowing son and daughter
to mourn their loss, viz., Mir Henry
Schafer, of Rosedale, and Mrs Mooney
of Melbourne.
The remains of deceased were interred
in the Rosedale cemetrey. Thee Rev.
Father Callinan offiated at the grave-
side

BIRTH.

Name: Henry Phillip SCHAFER.
Born: Sale Victoria.
Year: 1870.
Father: William SCHAFER.
Mother: Marsella MURTHY.
VBI Reg. #4848.

DEATH.

Name: Henry Phillip SCHAFER.
Died: 1946 RMB (Richmond?) Victoria.
Age: 76 years.
Father: William SCHAFER.
Mother: Marcella MURTHA.
VDI Reg. #4097.

This Henry appears to be Elizabeth's brother.
Have not worked out why Elizabeth was recorded as Mrs. ROONEY in 1924 as above and died in 1941 under the name of WILSON. This would indicate she was married to a ROONEY when her father died in 1924. Looks like Elizabeth may have been married twice.

by tonkin on 2016-05-16 01:33:21

Sorry ROONEY above should be MOONEY.

MARRIAGE of interest.

Groom: Alfred James MOONEY.
Bride: Elizabeth SCHAFER.
Year married: 1899.
Place: Kalgoorlie, Western Australia.
Reg. #229.

This is the only SCHAFER and MOONEY marriage located.
Elizabeth's name changed to WILSON between 1924 and 1941 but unable to locate a marriage.
