DEATH AT TAREE - Frederick John Thomas Burrows appeared before Mr Justice Pring and a jury at the Circuit Court, Newcastle, yesterday to answer a charge of manslaughter arising out of the death of a man with whom accused had been boxing at Taree. WIFE CHARGED WITH MURDER
. Henry John Burrows (43), garage proprietor, of Neville-road, Dalkeith, who was taken to the Perth Hospital on Thursday night suffering from a gaping wound in his right thigh as a result of gunshot wound, died early yesterday morning. His wife, Evelyn Florence Burrows (42), who was charged on Saturday with unlawfully wounding him and was remanded on bail, was yesterday arrested again and charged with the wilful murder of her husband
Daily News, 25 March 1937
BURROWS INQUEST OPENED - The city courtroom was crowded when the inquest into the death of Henry John Burrows, was begun at 2.15 this afternoon. A week ago today Burrows received a gun-shot wound which resulted in his death in the Perth Hospital on Sunday. Then followed the appearance of his widow, Evelyn Florence Burrows, on tho verge of collapse, in the Perth Police Court on Monday to face a charge of having murdered her husband. It was with these facts in their minds that those who crowded the public gallery came to hear the story of the shooting told. It was reported that a startling statement might be produced at the inquest.
The acting-District Coroner (Mr W. J. Wallwork, S.M.), is conducting the hearing, and nine witnesses are listed to give evidence.
Mr F. Curran is appearing for the widow.
Witnesses were examined by Inspector V. Houston.
Mr J. E. Nicholson appeared for the relatives of the deceased.
A shotgun, a cartridge belt and the clothing of the dead man were among the exhibits in Court.
WIDOW VEILED - Mrs Burrows was again dressed completely in black. She also wore a heavy black veil, the folds of which she pressed to her face. Only a white handkerchief which she held in her black gloved hand relieved the sombre figure.
Stephen John Head, garage proprietor of Bridgeway Service Station, West Perth, the first witness, said that Burrows was his brother-in law and partner in business. He gave evidence of identification.
Inspector Houston: You know his wife? Where is she now? — I do not
know. Look around the building and see if you can see her. Witness said that he could not.
Mr Curran: He probably could not identify Mrs. Burrows, who is at present weeping. Head said he last saw Burrows alive on March 19 at the hospital, when he appeared to be very ill. He thought Burrows was about 43 years of age. The inquest is proceeding.
Daily News, 25 March 1937 (extracts from confession) .. Evelyn Florence Burrows stated:_ I am the wife of Henry John Burrows, garage proprietor, of Thomas and Loftus streets, Perth. Our home is at 17 Hynes-road, Claremont. I am 42 years of age and Henry John Burrows is my second husband. I had one child by my first marriage. He is now a man of 23 years of age. I have been married to Burrows 13 years last January .. our married life has been unhappy in the first instance through my husband's meanness over money matters .. twelve months ago he purchased the Bridgway Service Station .. last October I became suspicious of my husband in connection with another woman .. he told me her name was Olive Innes or McInnes/McGuiness. I do know that her maiden name was Olive Hunt. I knew her at Peak Hill, She is a woman of about 36 to 38 years. She is married with two children .. I became infuriated and that, on top of his treatment of me generally, got me down and I made up my mind finally to shoot him after tea time .. I had no food all Thursday and very little all the week. I got the shot gun, I loaded the gun - both barrels. I brought the gun form the spare roon and waited - standing by the kitchen window outside - inside the enclosed verandah. I expected him home at about 9.30p.m. I saw the car come into the garage drive and saw the light switched on. I saw my husband come into the back verandah. He came in by means oof the garage door. I did not speak. I knew if I did my nerve would fail me. I intended to shoot him in the legs. I pulled the trigger and he fell. I don't know whether I fired one or two shots. I don't know whether he was sideways or full face on to me when I shot. He fell to the ground and screamed out. I was hysterical. I laughed. He said "Why did you do it?" I told him "You have driven me mad". He said "Go and ring for a doctor. Tell them it was an accident and that I have been shooting cats. I still love you." He told me again in the ambulance to keep to my story that he had been shooting cats and had an accident. I would have told this story in the first instance only my husband told me to tell the story of his accident while cat shooting ..
Great Southern Herald, 19 June 1937 DEATH SENTENCE COMMUTED. On April 14 a verdict of "Guilty of Murder, with a very strong recommendation to mercy" was returned by a jury in the Criminal Court. The State Government has decided to commute to a sentence of 12 years imprisonment with hard labour, the death sentence recorded against Evelyn Florence Burrows, for the murder of her husband, Henry John Burrows at Dalkeith
notes On the night of 16 Dec 1937, after 9 months of legal struggle, and a retirement of 9½ hours, a jury in the Criminal Court acquitted Evelyn of having murdered her husband, securing restoration of her liberty after three trials. A dispute over the profits of his service station, left to Evelyn in his will, was settled in court. The whole of his shares going to his brother William Burrows and none to her

Burrows went to his work as usual yesterday morning, but, feeling unwell, returned to his home, where he died about noon. The other was that of a man named Terence Coskelly, who had for some time past been in the employ of Mr S. E. Burges.

Western Angus, 18 June 1912 MOTOR CAR EPISODE - FOUR MEN INJURED - BRUISED ALL OVER.
Perth, June 16. A very bad motor car accident occurred at the terminus of the East Fremantle tramway at 1.30 on Saturday morning. The car, F No. 45, had been engaged early in the evening by four men. They had driven about a good deal in it. When coming from Bicton at the above stated hour, and when immediately opposite the termination of the tramline, the axle broke, the hind wheel came off, and the car, turning completely around, all the occupants were precipitated onto the road. The driver was a man named Sydney Herbert Burrows, of Cantonment street, Fremantle, and the other occupants of the car were:- George Clifton Newman, Subiaco; Henry James Matthews, Bridgetown; A. D. Lindberg, and Larry Arush, both of Quairading. The police and Dr. White were soon upon the scene, and the unfortunate men were removed per ambulance to the hospital. On arrival there, it was found that Newman suffered from a broken leg, that Matthews' head was cut badly, that Lindberg's head was cut, and that Arush had a broken collar-bone and an injured leg. In addition to these injuries all the men were bruised. In the words of a hospital official, "they were cut and bruised wherever there was a piece of flesh." In this respect the driver suffered more than the others. After treatment the men were all
allowed to go to their homes, with the exception of Newman and Matthews, who are now receiving indoor treatment at the hospital.

Hi Ngaire,
I found your list of Western Australia cemetery burials to be helpful, thanks.
My folk of interest are husband and wife/wives :
BURROWS, Charles Edward, died 1989, aged 75 years
BURROWS, Rose May, died 1950, aged 31 years

I imagine that Charles Edward remarried following the early death of his wife, Rose, after just six years of marriage.
The likely bride, according to electoral rolls, would be Elfie Mary, maiden name unknown.
BURROWS, Elfie Mary, died 1985, aged 60 years, according to your helpful list.
The marriage would have occurred outside the date range available from BDM W.A. Nevertheless is it possible to establish who Elfie Mary was and if and when she married Charles ?
Cheers Ray
