FREDERICK WILLIAM ROSS

Query by jr77

Looking for my g.grandmothers brother Frederick William Ross. Parents John Ross and Clara Elizabeth Ross nee Goodwin. FW was born in 1865 and registered at Preston Lancashire. His father John died in 1869 and Clara moved to Liverpool where FW appears on the 1871 census, living with his remarried mother Clara Harney and sister Clara and a boarder. In 1880 he was an apprentice on the HMS Indefatigable training ship at Liverpool. I have been unable to establish his whereabouts from there. Unfortunately there are several others with name F.W.Ross. I assume that he was employed as a sailor but the name Frederick Ross is very common. His sister moved to Brisbane Australia in 1881 and married Thomas Holt.

Thank you Janilye for your reply. This marriage is that of Frederick Williams sister Clara who went to Brisbane Australia with Thomas Holt and his wife Ada. Ada died and Clara married Thomas. Thomas and Clara are my g.grandparents. Clara named one of her sons Frederick after her brother but we have no information about any contact FW and Clara had after she moved to Australia. I found a couple of shipping records which could refer to FW but have no proof. One was a discharged seaman [FWs occupation] who was a passenger traveling from the USA to Liverpool, the other was of FW plus wife who arrived in Australia about 1910. I was unable to find their return voyage if in fact they did, but they certainly didnt reside in Australia according to my family. I hadnt come across your information re the wedding. Thank you again and may you have a successful new year sleuthing your ancestors! Regards Joan.

Hi Janilye, I discovered that FW Ross showed up on the Queensland Electoral rolls but disappeared again after 1907.He was living in the same stret as his sister Clara Holt and was a labourer. Have searched death records for him in other states without success.Maybe he returned to his life on the seas.
Regards
Joan
