* You did not mention Louisa.

I noticed Julia died in Camberwell and I expect this may be George's death.

Name: George Willis WHITE.
Died: 1923 in Camberwell, Victoria.
Age: 81 years.
Father: Stephen Webber WHITE.
Mother: Mary Ann BAGSHAW.
Ref: VDI #4621.

Cheers.

Thanks again tonkin. I have a family newspaper clipping showing Julia's death as 1947 December 25 at their home 'Tivoli' 5 Coolangatta Rd East Camberwell. So you could well be right. I believe Steven Webber and Mary Ann Bagshaw to be HIS parents.

by margjoy on 2013-04-22 06:39:47

Thanks tonkin. That is the Whites arrival to the Colony. Yes to Louisa.

by margjoy on 2013-04-22 06:52:51

I have another newspaper clipping with no indication of the year. I quote -
WHITE- on the 10th of May, at his residence "Tivoli" George Willis, dearly beloved husband of Julia White and loving father of Hubert (sic) Louise(Mrs Baker), Ernest, Horace (WA), Percy, Mabel (Mrs Lamborn), and brother of the late * White, aged 81, a colonist for 48 years.
* Nothing in that gap between late and White...

by margjoy on 2013-04-22 07:00:51

And also,
WHITE - On December 25 at 5 Coolangatta Rd East Camberwell, Julia, beloved wife of the late George Willis, and loved mother of Herbert, Louise (Mrs Baker), Ernest, Horace (Deceased), Percy (Deceased), and Mabel (Mrs Lamborn), in her 100th year.
(Private internment).

The family believed her to be nearly 100 but I have had trouble finding reconds for her birth. Do you research UK?? Kind regards Margaret

This appears to be Julia's death.

Name: Julia WHITE.
Died: 1947 Camberwell, Victoria.
Age: 99 years.
Father: Charles HARRIS.
Mother: Mary Ann COTTON.
Ref: VDI #13670.

I'm having a problem working out Julia's year of birth because of her age appearing on the passenger list in 1875 and her age given at death in 1947.

Something is wrong.

by margjoy on 2013-04-23 07:34:49

Still not right??

It's never easy Margaret.

I have a feeling the ages appearing on the passenger list were wrong and Julia was 26 years old and not 36 as stated. It appears George's age may also be wrong going by his given age at death.

As you know George and Julia had another three children after they arrived in Australia. Their last born, Mabel Ethel, was born in Richmond in 1885. The birth certificate for Mabel should confirm George and Julia's correct ages. Depending on the informant of course.

The Louisa that arrived with George and Julia on the "Northumberland" in 1875 was aged 09 years, which means she was born about 1866/67. This also means she was born a few years before George and Julia were married in 1869.

Will await your comments.

Out of wedlock? Previous marriage? Adoption of an orphaned relative? Younger sister of Julia?? Who knows??
Never boring ahahaa
I shall do some more work and see what I find.
Herbert George kept a "black book" full of newspaper clippings (many with no year or paper Name) and hand written notes, great jigsaw puzzle pieces!
I really appreciate your help.

Thanks, asheppard and tonkin, I am following this up. Looks like Louisa is probably a sister.

by margjoy on 2013-04-27 00:23:58

Probate has confirmed death date, children, - Louise being Louise Alice Baker at that time.

by margjoy on 2013-04-27 00:26:10

Death Date 10/05/1923.

by asheppard on 2013-04-27 00:49:29

This is possibly Louise's marriage

Australia Marriage Index, 1788-1950 about Louise Alice White

and maybe her Birth

by tonkin on 2013-04-27 01:06:57

This looks like Louise's death.

Name: Louise Alice BAKER.
Died: 1949 West Richmond, Victoria.
Age: 76 years.
Father: George WHITE.
Mother: Julia HARRIS.
Ref: VDI #369.

Louise gave her birth place as London when she married BAKER in 1899.

by asheppard on 2013-04-27 21:29:29

Sorry forgot to add about St. Olave

The district St. Olave is an alternative name for St Olave Southwark and it spans the boundaries of the counties of London and Surrey.

Seven days of work on George Willis White and Julia Harris trying to link ages places, siblings, children, back checking others in the family, then I found his brother Richard Henry White (divorced) of 'Norwood' Brighton Victoria married a Louisa Marie Harris, parents - Charles Harris and Mary Ann Cotton so Louisa and Julia are sisters. But not the 9 yo Louisa on the ship Northumberland unless it is a printing error?? Age changed??

George Willis White probably worked in Richard White's Boots manufacturing company Young St Fitzroy. George was listed on various Electoral rolls as bootmaker, boot manufacturer, boot operative.

by margjoy on 2013-04-30 17:27:27

L.M. Harris witnessed the marriage of George and Julia so I assume that is Louisa Marie, Julia's sister.

by margjoy on 2013-05-01 18:34:11

My mistake, Herbert George, son of George Willis White, was the boot manufacturer, boot operative. Sorry

The Passenger List at PROV is very hard to read as the page had been folded till unreadable but now, 2 years later ... the GOOD NEWS ... a cousin has the original Cabin Passengers Contract Ticket, WOO HOO. Both Louisa Harris, age 31, the sister, and Louise White the daughter are listed. Doing a little Snoopy Dance here. :)
