Half Irish, Half English, all Australian

Article by junimoon

Hi, My name is Juni and have been interested in my ancestors since I was about three years old. I learned so much from my great aunt Hilda Wilson. Aunt Hilda was the grand daughter of convict Daniel Gleeson, from Roscre Tipperary, Ireland, who came to Australia on a broken down vessel Governor Ready in 1829 to Port Jackson New South Wales. He was then sent to the Brisbane Water Gosford.

I cannot tell you why, but I have a deep feeling of love and respect for my Irish family and this may be due to the fact that my Aunt Hilda knew them, loved them, and she and he siblings were much loved by this family from an ancient land. She told me of the great tricks her grandfather told her and her sisters and brothers that he had played on his friends. The Irish words they used, and why when strangers came to their door, they spoke the Irish language because they feared the brutality of the English toward the Irish and they did not want trouble for them or their family. She told about the fiddle being played by Daniel and the dances they had on the dirt floor of their cabin.
