Hanify from Galway

Journal by alandal

I have been searching for some years now for the birth of John Hanify supposedly born abt 1858 Loughrae, Galway, Ireland. He married Ellen Sheridan on 6 September 1883 at Loughrae. Ellen was possibly born 1862 at Kitullagh, Booken, Galway.

Their first known child, Catherine, was born and died in March 1885 in Queensland, Australia, so they came to Australia between those two dates. There were 5 children all born in Queensland but 2 of them died as infants, I can't find anything on the third child and two daughters survived and married.

Mary Ann b 1886 married Thomas Nangle 1903 in Roma Queensland.

Would love any help to find the name of the ship and their date of arrival.

I can find a 'Catherine Hanify' that arrived in Sydney NSW as an assisted immigrant aboard the ship Hereford in 1878 aged 22 years. State Records NSW

Going by FamilySearch there are some HANIFY family members (possibly related to your bunch) that travelled from Victoria to settle in Queensland - Brisbane.

For help with finding the name of the ship and date of arrival, your best bet would be to register as a new user of RootsChat, free site, then goto their Australia board and post a lookup providing details on what you already have, and what exactly you are looking for.

Thanks for that information. I do have most of it and a couple of certificates. The Catherine, arrived 1878 I have not found a connection with but there would probably be one.
I think that the Page Hanify family may be very closely related but have no proof as yet.
Thanks again

Hello - Ellen (daughter of John andllen) Hanify was my great grandmother. I am afraid I cannot add much as I am also struggling to find info - do you know where and when John died? His wife Ellen died in Roma QLD in 1907 - hope to hear from you. Ken

Hello
I have been doing research on Hanifys form Galway for a friend, who descends from Michael John Page Hanify, born in Clifden, Galway, died Victoria c 1871.
I noted your thread, and your search for Ellen Sheridan whom you believed was born in Bookeen. I also note it is 13 years since you last posted. FYi, I found baptism on 20 April 1856, of "Ellenor", dau of Thomas Sheridan and Catherine Holleran, in Carabane Catholic parish registers (on-line via NLI). Looks like the one you were looking for you (if you have not already found it!)
I scanned the following 6 years years and found baptisms of children to Thomas Sheridan and Margaret Fallon (in 1963, 1864), and Michael Sheridan and Winifred Kennedy (1865).
A John Hanify and Ellen Hanify were sponsors at a baptism on 18 Oct 1863.
A John Sheridan held a lease of about 9 acres in Bookeen South, Lickerrig Civil Parish (which is Carabane Catholic Parish) in Griffiths Valuation 1851.
Hope this helps.
