On the 13 August 1888, Annie's father Thomas Daniel, who was a plasterers' laborer, fell from a scaffolding at Camberwell. He was standing on a ladder leaning against the scaffolding when it gave way. He died at the Alfred Hospital on the 19th. August 1888.
The inquest was held on the 21 August 1888. It was deemed accidental death. The rules at that time were that it was up to the plasterers and their laborers to make sure the scaffolding was safe.
His family were left destitute at the time and a Ball and Concert was held at the Richmond Town Hall, on the 26 September 1888, to raise money for their aid.
£200 was raised.

Hi

Thank you very much for this information particularly the story of which I will follow up through other sources. It may give some more information on this Wood Line in Victoria. I still really need to confirm which Annie Wood is correct but the more I have the more I can check. I do not have a middle name on the Birth Certificate of annie wood's child born in 1907 which makes cross checking a little difficult. Thanks for all your prompt info.

Would this be the child born to Annie WOOD in 1907?
Confirmation may assist with further record searches.

To confirm you have the correct Annie Esther you need to find out what happened to her mother Clara, nee Horton. Did she re marry? were names changed to the new husband's? What happened to Annie's sisters, Clara Wilhelmina Wood and Sarah Frances Wood and her brother John James Horton Wood. These children were registered at birth as WOOD did they all change surname to WOODS. It does make a difference when researching.

The press seem to have favored WOODS so you are going to have to research both names.

The Herald Tue 21 Aug 1888 Page 2
BRIEF MENTION.

Dr. Youl, City Coroner, held an inquest at
the Alfred Hospital this morning upon the
body of Thomas Daniel Woods, a plasterer's
laborer, who fell from a scaffold at Camberwell
on the 19 August, and died in the hospital
on the 10th. From the evidence of several
witnesses. it appeared that deceased was stand-
ing on a ladder at work when the scaffold fell,
bringing down the chimney, knocking over the
ladder, and precipitating Woods heavily to the
ground. It was stated by fellow workmen of
deceased's that it was the duty of the plasterers
and their assistants to see that the scaffolding
was secure. The Coroner said, in his experience,
where people had met their death by
falling scaffolding it was invariably the fault
of the plasterers. He thought some super
vision should be exercised over these
men. The jury returned a verdict of "accidental death."

Hi Jan
Thanks for your valued information on the above. I am still cross checking with other details to see if this is the right Annie Esther WOOD at this stage. I have tracked down the death of her mother. Clara Robertson nee Wood, Horton died in 1926 Fitzroy Vic #9675
Would like to check her Death Cert but haven't as yet. Annie lived with her mother and brother until 1919 and then disappeared. I am unable to find anything further on her at this stage. I did see something where she possibly went to live with her sister Clara at Red Cliffs but nothing to prove she did. I did cross check this Annie with Mental Hospital records that showed she was admitted and stayed there for a while according to Ancestry records. There's even a photo. Her addrss given cross matched with her Sister's address at the time.
Would like to know when and where she died or what happened.
