Looking for children of James WHYTE and Mary GREIG, of Canterbury/Feilding , New Zealand

Query by Carolbea

James Whyte, son of George WHYTE and Margaret BEATON,Cust,New Zealand, previously of New Aberdour, Scotland married Mary GREIG in 1879, Canterbury, New Zealand. They had three children:
Alexander William WHYTE, Elesphet Louise WHYTE and child unknown.

Mary WHYTE died in Feilding , New Zealand in Feb 1884 after a long illness. In October 1884 James filed for bankruptcy in Christchurch.
The three children were later taken into care and placed in the Burnham Institute, period of time unknown and then placed with their grandfather George WHYTE of Cust, Canterbury. In 1891 there is a court case between George WHYTE and his son James Whyte for maintainence. James WHYTE states that he has four illigitimate children who he is caring for and wishes to take care of his other three children. The court refused his application for care of his children due to James being in an unmarried relationship. Have no further information after 1891.

Who was Mary Greig? There is a Grieg Road, in Ohaka, Canterbury and it is known that George and Margaret Whyte and son James lived for a period of time in that district before farming at Cust.

Interested in any information on WHYTE/ GREIG children, other family of James Whyte and where James WHYTE lived until his death. Also interested in GREIG family?

Thanks
Have possibly found the other child Margaret Beaton Grieg born 1879. James's Mother died about that time so this child may have been named in her memory.

Marriages that now interest :
William Alexander WHYTE married in 1910 to Janet Amelia RIORDAN
William WHYTE died 1950
Janet WHYTE died 1970

Elspeth WHITE married 1903 to John Jefferies MILNER
Elspeth died 1957
John died 1934

May have been in the Dunedin/Invercargill New Zealand area

Have identified through certificates that these marriages of interest have no connection to the two children I have an interest in.
Updated info on GREIG family seeking information about:
believe that Mary Grieg's g/parents were Alexander GREIG and Christian SCOTT m= 30 Nov 1820 in Stricken Scotland and their son Alexander(b 1821) Stricken married Mary MACKIE (b abt 1823 at CRIDEN, Scotland ) and they had a family of 12 children( Mary GREIG who married James WHYTE being their 6th born child). Believe that GREIG family emigrated to NZ in 1860's possibly abt 1862 and may have been assisted to come by brother of Alexander William GREIG.
It is possible that Alexander GREIG relocated to Stratford, Taranaki region and died 1897, however no trace of wife Mary MACKIE GREIG.

Hi, I have just signed up today as I am interested in tracking my family history. My name is Scott George Whyte, I grew up on our family farm in the Taramoa area of Southland, NZ. My father's name is Alistair George Whyte. My Grandfather was George ? Whyte who was one son in a big family of about 11 children from the Tuatapere area, Southland. I need to check with my father but I'm pretty sure My great grandfathers name was William Alexander Whyte.

Delighted to make contact as a fellow NEW ZEALAND WHYTE researcher and particularly if you are a direct link to the Whyte brothers George and James WHYTE who were early settlers in Cust and Oxford areas from New Aberddour, Aberdeenshire in Scotland - have considerable information on the families at Cust and some early photographs.
Have also information on the WHYTE, QUHYT families in Aberdour, Aberdeenshire earliest primary record links family to this area dating back to 1400.

Most of this ties in with data I hold although there are two earlier children Isabella born married name BIRCH and William James Ernest Cherry Whyte born 1881.

Interested in marriage of Emily Jane to George Everitt- have marriages toPercy William Burgess 1909 and James Egan 1931.
James Whyte born 1896 died in Stratford 1976 and buried at te Henui New Plymouth. Will follow up on the Invercargill death.

Wonder if you can assist ? LOOKING for CHERRY photographs
I have a very bad photocopy of a photograph of the Cherry Homestead with several people in foreground, one is a woman with a white apron on.
The house matches a photograph that has the whyte family with the cherry family that I have in my possesssion. Also have a m\lovely photograph of the Cherry family. From the clothes looks like taken on same day as the photo was taken with the Whyte family. I think the bad photocopy is from an earlier photograph that was given to me back in 1980's- would love to get a recent copy?

Re Emily Whyte. I have been trying to trace what happened to Emily after the death of her first husband Percy William Burgess. Do you have a copy of her marriage certificate you can share the details of for her marriage to James Egan. Emily would have been 39 at time of her second marriage, did she have children to this marriage? I have details of issue to her first marriage. What happened to both Emily and James? Any help here would be grateful to receive.
