Have a little information for you.

Henry THOMAS (aged 28 years) and Eliza TIPPET (aged 30 years) were married in Kenwyn, Cornwall on the 13 October, 1862. Witnesses to the marriage were Walter TIPPET and T G HICKS.

There was an Eliza TIPPETT baptised in Truo, Cornwall on the 29 August, 1830. Her parents were recorded as Walter TIPPETT and Jane. I was unable to find a marriage for this Walter and Jane. I expect this will be the baptism for your Eliza.

There was an Eliza THOMAS buried in Kenwyn on the 2 May 1862, but her age was recorded as 37 years. One could easily accept this as the burial of Henry's wife, accept for the seven year age difference. It would also mean Eliza was buried five months befor her marriage. If the records are correct this can not be the death of Henry's wife Eliza.

Thanks Tonkin for your prompt reply. There is some confusion here alright.. My Henry Thomas without doubt emigrated to Australia on the Golden city departing Plymouth 17/10/1864 arriving Brisbane 3/01/1865, the family is totally traceable from there on.

Henry Married Ann Eudey in Redruth July 1863 (Ann is recored as Endey in Australian records) I have the documentation of marriage and voyage to Australia. They had two children on arrival one was my great Grandfather Alfred Henry Thomas the other was William who died a year after birth in 1866.

Henry himself died in Taradale 2/09/1867 and the death record shows that he was only 24 when he died. He was, however also mentioned in his mothers will. There is also a record of another relative that refers to him as "uncle Harry" quite why the Harry instead of Henry is unknown but might have been a nickname.

I have been able to trace the family back to my 13th Great Grandfather in St Agnes 1520, but this particular era and the possibility that Henry was previously married is a detail that I would like to sort out.

The details you log are interesting and I thank you, but I fear that there are too many things that do not match to make this Eliza that ties in with my family tree.

I was just curious because you have your Henry born in 1843, and the Henry that married Eliza TIPPET in 1862 would have been born about 1834, if the age recorded at the time of marriage is correct.

Harry is just another name for Henry, like Jack is another name for John. Elizabeth becomes Betty or Betsy, and Nancy becomes Ann. Name changes are just little things I keep in mind when searching the records.

I have now established beyond doubt that my Henry Thomas was NOT previously married His marriage certificate to Ann Eudey 29th August 1863 shows him as a "bachelor" aged 20 (dob 1843) living at Broad Lane, Illogan. His father was William Thomas "deceased" who is shown as "Mine Agent". Ann is shown as a "Spinster" aged 22 (dob 1841)living at Broad Lane, Illogan. Her father is shown as William Eudey, Ore Dresser.

Despite the earlier information that Henry was previously married it is unlikely that in a small community he would have got away with saying he was a bachelor, although anything is possible especially as Henry and Ann got married in Redruth and departed for Australia the following year.
