Looking for MORRIS of Virginia/W. Virginia/Kentucky

Query by emilymorris

I am researching my gggrandfather, John Morris, who was born about 1780 in Virginia. He married Nancy Pennel, daughter of Pierce Butler Pennell, a Revolutionary War soldier and his wife Elizabeth. I have located the will of John Morris who died in Lincoln County, Kentucky about 1841. It lists his heirs and five of them are minors. I don't know what happened to Nancy, his wife. John Morris and Nancy Pennel were married on 21 February in Casey county, Kentucky. They lived in Hustonville, Lincoln County. John is listed in the 1830 and 1840 census in Lincoln county.

John's Inventory of Estate was filed in Februaey, 1842. In 1844, Lorenzo Dow Goode, who was the father-in-law of his son, Thomas, was appointed as guardian of the minor children. The probate for the Settlement of the Estate was not finalized until 1847, and Lorenzo Dow Goode remained guardian of the girls even after their marriage.

His heirs listed are Eliza Ann, born 1809 and married Moses Yowell on 20 February in Lincoln County, They moved to Macoupin County, Illinois about 1850, where she died in 1882.

John Morris, who I have no birthdate, married Francis Elizabeth Johnson, 28 August 1843 in Lincoln county. They also moved to Illinois about 1850.

Thomas Morris, born 1812 married Nancy Jane Goode in Lincoln county 3 May 1844. They remained in Lincoln county and raised a large family. These are my great great grandparents. Most of thier children moved to Missoui. My great grandfather, Thomas, married Francis Ellen Raley/Railey from Marion County on 29 Nov. 1871 in Clay county, Missouri. Eventually, Thomas and Nancy Jane moved to Missouri. Her mother-in-law Mildred Goode had left her a house in Henry County, but i don't know if she lived there or not. their youngest child, Martha Ann "Mattie" was married in Johnson County, Missouri in 1885, and Thomas gave written consent for her marriage. They are listed in the 1880 census in Hustonville.

Mary Jane born about 1824 and married Charles W. Terry and is living in Barren County, Kentucky in 1880.

Elizabeth, who I have no birthdate, married Alexander Helm on 4 May 1839 in Lincoln, Co.

Frances Morris, was born 17 April, 1821 and married William Pennington on 5 June 1838 in Lincoln County. They moved to kansas and she died in Aug 1891 in Douglas county.

Ellen M., who I have no birthdate for and have no information, except that she was one of the five minor children of John Morris in 1842.

Sarah Ann, born 9 Nov 1825 married Henry White Bradford about 1844. They lived in Bradfordsville in Marion County and had children William and Mary.

Lucinda, born 25 Dec. 1827, married Adam James Bradford about 1844. He was a brother to William White Bradford. They had a daughter Ann in 1848. She is listed as a widow in 1880 in Marion county, and later marries Robert C. Daniels. She is buried next to Adam James Bradford in Marion County.

William, was born in 1833 and is listed in the 1880 census in Linn County, Missouri living with his brother, Rice. He is listed as a hardware clerk.

Rice, born 12 April, 1836 married Catherine "Kate" Nelson 30 July, 1868 in Linn county, Missouri. He is listed as a hardware merchant in the 1880 census. He died in March, 1916 and is buried at the Linneus City Cemetery in Linn County along with his wife.

At the time of John's death Sarah Ann, Lucinda, Ellen M. , William and Rice are listed as minors. I don't know what happened to Nancy, his wife. I also don't know where John is buried, or who his parentage is. I do know that Sarah Ann states he was born in Virginia, and he may have a brother James, although I have no proof of this.

Some of the family names that are associated with this family are ANDERSON, LEE, BELL, POTTER, RICE, GOODE, COPPAGE, RAILEY/RALEY, HELM, BRADFORD, NELSON,PURDY, PENNEL/PENNELL,, THOMPSON, MILLARD, MCDONALD, SMITH, HINCHER, JOHNSON, WALKER, possibly KING, STEPHENS, EVANS, SELBY, BROWN. Hello Donna,

Thank you so much for replying to my post. Do you know anything about John Morris, the father of Thomas? I found out that he was an orphan and that the family that raised him was not his parents. I have no idea at what age he was orphaned. He lived in Lincoln county, Kentucky but was born in Virginia, although I am not sure what county. I will go to the websites that you have listed and see what I can find out. I have already found out quite a bit, especially on the Goode family, but i'm stuck on John Morris, and who his siblings and parents are. I appreciate your help . I just recently found a picture of the family of my great grandfather, John Henry, from a descendant of Alphonso Morris.

Blessings,
Emily Morris
