Looking for Patrick HOLCROFT of Manchester, UK

Patrick HOLCROFT is my brick wall. Born Ireland (possibly Northern Ireland) about 1800 he married Manchester girl Mary CROPLEY 1824. The couple had 5 children, Thomas, Sarah A, Mary A, William and Joseph. The family lived in Manchester and all worked in the cotton mills. Most of Patrick and Mary's children I have been able to follow, William is my 2nd great grandfather, but I cannot find reference to Patrick or Mary apart from the England Census dates 1841 and 1851. Most frustrating of all I cannot find any information about either Patrick or Mary's parents. The date regarding the couples marriage in 1824 was sent to my by a relative but there is no further details available. What I do have is "St Mary's Church, Parish of Manchester, (Bishop's Transcripts)".

There is a marriage at St Mary's Church that may possibly be Patrick and Mary

Marriage: 2 May 1824 St Mary, Manchester, Lancashire, England
Patrick Holcroft, bachelor, bookkeeper,
& Mary Crossley, spinster

Hi Shellyb, Thank you so much for that information. I found Patrick and Mary and the occupation of Patrick fits, although Mary's surname is Crossley instead of Cropley, but this could be a transcription interpretation.

Do you know if it is possible to find out anything more from these transcripts or is what we see on the page all there is? I am now searching the site for all Holcroft's and trying to cross-reference.

I'm not sure if you are able to find out if anything more is availiable on the transcripts. I would have said what is there is all they have as some entries are much more detailed.

An excellent place for you to ask for help or find other Lancashire resources is on www.rootschat.com. Its a free site to join. If you navigate to Lancashire you will see at the top of the page Lookup Offers, Lookup Requests and Lookup Resources. The resources is what I suggest as there are hundreds of links to free online information that you otherwise wouldn't find. I've had lots of success using rootschat and would highly recommend it. (my apologizes if you already know about this)

I found the marriage of Patrick and Mary on familysearch and Mary's surname was spelt Crossley there as well. Spellings do change alot in the old records. I would suggest you search using both spellings, which you probably are anyway.
