Mary Patricia Wake was born on 25th May 1924, in the Rotorua area of New Zealand. Her mother was Agnes Veronica Wake, born in England in 1900 and known as Veronica. Mary's father is unknown, but may have come from a well-to-do family. In 1925 they moved to New South Wales, where Veronica married Frederick Shields. Veronica died in Australia in 1974.
