Dear Lisa, Hi there. Glad to see you on this website. Hope you have some joy.

Q.Have you been able to check the Parish Records for Gloucester churches yet?

Hello,

I have not tracked down the parish records for Gloucester yet.

I have a 50th wedding anniversary invitation that suggests Joshua MILLS and Emma SEALEY were married in Stroud and that Emma SEALEY was of King Stanley (Kingstanley), her fathers name being Thomas SEALEY and that Joshua MILLS father was Jeremiah M MILLS.

I've had no luck at all locating Jeremiah M MILLS in Stroud, Cowley, Kingstanley or indeed anywhere in Gloucester.

I do know that the MILLS family originates from Gloucester as my great uncle told tales of the house on a return visit to the UK - and it matches the wedding anniversary invitation.

I do have one nagging doubt about Emma - Llewellyn Joseph MILLS death certificate states his mothers maiden name as FRENCH not SEALEY.

This strikes me as rather odd - perhaps there were more than one set of Joshua and Emma's out there? It's a little mystery to be resolved.

If you know of a site that has online Glo parish records please let me know.

Hi Lisa, Interesting info, let's see if you can find some actual facts. As Gloucestershire is not my area of expertise (I haven't got any ancestors there...well not yet anyhow, follow these links).

Perhaps there were more than a few MILLS families, very hard with a common and popular surname like that to research.

And perhaps Llewellyn MILLs mother remarried hence the names FRENCH and SEALEY. You will have to explore all the avenues of births, marriages and deaths, then check burial records. People often go to cemeteries in England as lookup requests for others.

Goto this link below and have a look at the Gloucestershire Parishes websites links.

Gloucestershire Resources at Rootschat.com

Hopefully all the links are active, if not, an alternative would be to post a topic 'Gloucestershire Parish Records Lookup' and include your actual and probable data.

Good luck.

I amy have to start with procuring a copy of JOSHUA MILLS death certificate here in New Zealand to sort the wheat from the chaff first.

I did think about remarriage - however if you think about the order of the wedding in 1865 recording Emma SEALEY as the bride - her father being Thomas SEALEY it seems pretty clear she started life as a SEALEY. (Unless her mother was previously married to a FRENCH and she took her step fathers name - it does happen!)

Then when Emma MILLS (nee SEALEY) son died, his Death Certificate shows his mothers maiden name as FRENCH. Perhaps its the death cert thats wrong?

The wedding anniversary invitation is a formal printed document that states the household in Auckland that the event took place in and records the name of the occupant - one of Emma and Joshua's sons.

One has to wonder about the reliability of Death Certificate information.

I think it may be time to compare information on a couple more family Death Certificates!

I will try to locate Parish records once I'm certain I'm looking for the correct Joshua and Emma MILLS who migrated to New Zealand before 1880, settling first in Paparoa.

Hey there Lisa, It took me 20 minutes but I've created an up-to-date list of the best links I could find on Gloucestershire as I didn't have that on here on familytreecircles yet. Have a look, you will get lost in some of the websites. I especially loved the ones on the history of the county and the BBC one.

Oh, and a comment on your 2nd last sentence, although costly I have found it useful sometimes to purchase certs on all children in a family as sometimes there is differing info as you have found.

Cheers,
Al.

Hello Lisa, We have two Turner brothers from Dunbar Gloucester shire, William Henry with wife Monica, arriving in Sydney 18 Aug 1857.
Allington Robert Turner & wife Sarah nee Mills Turner from Uley, Gloucestershire arrived in Australia 1857, he was a farmer sadly he died of consumption at the age of 40.
Sarah with her eldest son Joseph (my great grandfather) & her other children took up land in Junee NSW Australia, where she named her property 'Oakdale' this name Oakdale might have something to do with her family connection in Gloucestershire with the same name, they did pay their own way to Australia they both could read and write. I am wondering if you know of any Turner/Mills families that came to Australia...if so would be great to hear from you...cheers Jan
