* In 1916 he was the stationmaster at Mosgiel. Their home was a short distance north of the Gordon road railway crossing

* In 1919 he was transferred to be the stationmaster at Taumarunui
* On 23 Oct 1923 Alfred retired as stationmaster at Taumarunui after having been 40 years with the Railway Department, serving from Bluff to Auckland
* In 1940 Alfred & Lillian were in Manunui, Wanganui, when their son Leslie became engaged to Nancy Jean Carter of Taumarunui. They were still there in Jan 1943
Alfred died 17 June 1943 in a private hospital in Auckland and was buried in Taumarunui (see photo at end)
