The CAZES, CASSE, LACASSE families of Quebec.

Journal by djteitel

My mother's maiden name is CASSE. Her grandfather was Joseph LACASSE. His grandfather was born Joseph CAZES and changed it when he immigrated to Massachusetts. I am interested in finding out more about the CAZES family in Ste. Anne de la Pocatiere in Quebec, Canada. I have some pictures, photos, and some stories from living relatives. I came across two tintypes that may be me great great great grandparents, Joseph CAZES and Arthemise MARTIN. I would love to confirm this and also need help identifying other old photos from Quebec.
I am a French teacher so I can read French, if documents are in French. I speak French fluently, also, so I can communicate via telephone.
Hope to find out more! Thanks.

Hi, my name is...Joseph CAZES, like my grandfather and great-grandfather. I'm not sure I can help you much with your research as my line of Cazes comes from Spain (before 1492), then Spanish Morocco till 1811 when we arrived in Gibraltar. I have come across this link which might be of interest to you...http://www.dankazez.com/kazez-cazes.html
Our branch does appear there.
Good luck in your research

Dear Joseph, Thank you so much for taking the time to write. It is interesting to think that perhaps the Cazes family that came to Canada in the 18th century from France could possibly be descended from those who first lived in Spain. However, there would have had to be a conversion to Christianity at some point.
Where do you live now? I know there are many "Cazes" individuals living in Canada and Louisiana.
Thanks
Dan

Hi Dan

We still live on the Rock (of Gibraltar).

You're right, although the name is originally Jewish, many were forced to convert by the inquisition so there are plenty of Cazes now who are Christian. But some of us made it through...

Interestingly, a friend recently sent me a photo of a name plaque in a Spanish city with the name Yu?e Ca?es (Old Spanish form of Joseph Cazes) indicating the house where he lived in the mid-1400s, before the expulsion!

All the best
