the Roman Catholic MOUNT STREET CEMETERY is a protected heritage site in Wellington, New Zealand (click link for more). It was the first cemetery in Wellington for Catholic burials and contains the graves of the first nuns and priests in Wellington. It remained open until 1891 although burials continued in existing family plots until 1954. The earliest surviving grave marker dates from 1851, and the latest from 1954. Although only around 200 headstones survive, it is estimated that there could have been as many as 1150 burials. Many of the early markers were simple wooden crosses, which have long since vanished

NOTE Timothy died at the Immigration Depot on Somes Island, 2 weeks after arriving. He was born in County Limerick in 1874 and emigrated to New Zealand on the 'Rodney', (which arrived in Wellington 29 August 1875) with his parents Timothy TROY (1841-1910) & Mary O'CONNELL (1842-1898)and a 9 year old brother James Troy. Timothy & Mary had 3 other children back in Limerick who arrived the following year with Timothy's (snr) two siblings, Mary and Michael Troy on the 'Waimea'.
Timothy & Mary moved up to Turakina, Wanganui and had 2 more children, Timothy Troy (1877-1877 who died aged 6 months) & Margaret Josehine Troy (1883-1921 who died in Kaikoura)

22 Oct 1881 Michael Trohy, carter, died suddenly at his residence in Hobson-street, at half past 8 o'clock last night. The cause of death will in all probability be determined upon a Coroners jury. It appears that the deceased returned home shortly after 8 o'clock last night, complaining of being attacked by sharp pains in the stomach. From a chemist a draught was obtained with the object of allaying the pain. This, however, seemed to have little effect and death ensued at the hour named. The services of a medical gentleman do not seem to have been solicited. The deceased was about 60 years of age, a widower, and possessed of two dwellinghouses in Hobson-street. No suspicious circumstances surround the occurrence. An inquest will be held at the Metropolitan Hotel, Milesworth-street, on Monday next at 11 a.m.

* Brother Jean 'Deodat' Villemagne FMS, M.A. (1816-1842), was born Jean Villemagne 25 Aug 1816 in St Etienne, Loire, France, entering the Novitiate in 1839 and making his profession in 1841. He sailed for NZ that Nov and after a short stay at Kororareka, was sent to Auckland to assist Father Borjon in founding the Port Nicholson mission.
* Father Michel Francois Xavier Borjon SM, M.A. (1811-1842), born 24 Sep 1811 in Arbigny, near Lyon, France, was ordained 16 July 1837 and made his religious profession in 1839. He set out for NZ in Dec 1840 with fellow Maris missionaries Fathers Seon, Garin and Rozet and M. Jean-Francois Yvert (who is buried in this cemetery). From Aug 1841 he was stationed at Maketu. In 1842 Bishop Pompallier allotted him a new mission - Port Nicholason (Wellington), where he was to be the first parish priest.
It was not to be, On 1 Aug 1842, Father Borjon and Brother Deodat embarked on the schooner 'Speculator in Auckland and on 12 Aug left Whitianga for Wellington. They never arrived. A storm ensued. The 'Speculator' was last sighted off Mercury Bay 12 Aug 1842. It was not until Sep 1843 that the windlass of the 'Speculator' was found off Cape Runaway by a whaling party. It was supposed that she had hit a reef off East Cape

Von ALZDORF, Mary Elizabeth (Madame) - 16 June 1885 aged 66
. Madame Mary Elizabeth Von Alzdorf arrived with her husband, Baron Charles Ernest Von Alzdorf on the 'Adelaide' in 1840. They kept the old Wellington Hotel on the Beach, Lambton Quay and it was in this house Baron Alzdorf met his death when a chimney fell on him during the great earthquake. No plaque nor headstone by the specific request of Baron Charles Von Alzdorf. His will instructed that he be buried in unconsecrated ground near the grave of his friend William Wakefield.
Madame Mary Elizabeth Von Alzdorf died 30 years later in Makara
17 June 1885 - The death of another of the earliest pioneers of the colony has to be chronicled. We refer to that of Mary Elizabeth Alzdorf, widow of the late Charles Ernest Von Alzdorf, who met his death in 1855 through the falling of a chimney during the great earthquake of that year. The deceased lady and her husband arrived in Wellington by the "Adelaide" in the year 1840 at which time Madame Alzdorf was only 21 years of age. The Alzdorf for some years kept the old Wellington Hotel on the Beach and it was in this house Baron Alzdorf met his death. Madame Alzdorf shortly afterwards retired from business and had resided at Makara for some time prior to her demise. She was beloved by all who knew her and notwithstanding she had been afflicted with blindness for the last 35 years, she possessed those sympathetic and loving qualities which prove so attractive and winning to young people

Being an isolated island nation, New Zealand was keen to protect itself from diseases such as typhoid, smallpox and scarlet fever. Immigrants arriving in Wellington harbour were cleared through Somes Island. Wellington's new arrivals were made to sit in a smoke house, in chlorine, potassium nitrate and sulphur fumes, for 10 minutes to get rid of lice. During this 'lay over' time a number of new immigrants died (or gave birth) and in 1970 the memorial cairn below was erected to remember them. Timothy's name is on the memorial
