James was a Police Constable in Blenheim, Kaikoura, Picton & Nelson districts. He is said to have drowned at sea, Sulawesi Tengah, Indonesia, in 1872 (when baby James was 2 months old) leaving Janet as a young widow (aged 24) with 3 small children. She moved to a Sawmillers Cottage in the Koromiko district and supported her family by working as a nurse/midwife

William was born in Adrossan, North Ayrshire, the 8th of 11 known children of John TANNAHILL and Helen BURNS. He emigrated to New Zealand alone on the BENGAL MERCHANT leaving Glasgow 30 Oct 1839, arriving Port Nicholson 20 Feb 1840
His wife Elizabeth was also from Scotland, she was travelling on the same boat (don't know if this is where they met). They married in New Zealand 6 weeks after arriving, when he was 20 and she was 19. They had 13 (known) children. They lived in Petone and later moved to Taita. He died 17 years before her
