TULLAMARINE, BULLA AND BROADMEADOWS (TOWNSHIP) MEMORIALS, VIC., AUST. (and Keilor.)

Journal by itellya

Having just used the D volume of my DICTIONARY HISTORY OF TULLAMARINE AND MILES AROUND for an entry in my DICTIONARY HISTORY OF BULLA, I decided to have a quick look at what I'd written about 23 years ago and made an exciting discovery. An entry called DIGGERS,starting on page D47 has a record of of all the names on the war memorials mentioned in the title, and brief descriptions of where the servicemen lived etc.

Names from the Keilor Roll of Honour (then in the Courthouse cum Old Shire Hall) had also been transcribed but unfortunately had been mislaid at the time of writing. I had also found essays written by Keilor State School students about soldiers such as (Bernard?) Nash in the City of Keilor strongroom while I was transcribing Keilor rates due to the co-operation of Adrian Dodoro, a rates officer better known now as the Essendon Football Club recruiting officer.

As DHOTAMA is handwritten, it would take too long to transcribe every name, but if anyone (living too far from the three memorials to easily inspect the memorials them selves)would like me to check if any of their family members or friends are listed, please send me a private message,or ask in comments.

One name from each memorial has been put in the surnames list.

Itellya is researching local history on the Mornington Peninsula and is willing to help family historians with information about the area between Somerville and Blairgowrie. He has extensive information about Henry Gomm of Somerville, Joseph Porta (Victoria's first bellows manufacturer) and Captain Adams of Rosebud.

The following was to be part of a new journal which for some strange reason is UNDER REVIEW. As the journal, concerning the launch of a book about the WILL WILL ROOK CEMETERY today (18-5-2015) at the Age Library and the chance discovery of the Shire of Broadmeadows Roll of Honour downstairs in the Hume Global Learning Centre may never appear, I've decided to post the latter here. The names for the districts not yet transcribed will be added in another comment box here when I again journey to Melbourne. Question marks were necessary in some names because I could not properly decipher my scribbled transcription.

BROADMEADOWS SHIRE ROLL OF HONOUR.
Today itellya saw the Hume Global Learning Centre for the first time. And found a treasure! While I was transcribing the names, a chap came up and started looking at the names on the roll of honour. We discussed some of the names and eventually introduced ourselves. He looked familiar, as I had looked familiar to him. He was Bob Mackay of the Essendon Historical Society and I had last seen him over 20 years ago. We'd both been invited to the book launch in the Age Library. Unfortunately my effort to transcribe all the names on the treasure failed but this will be continued on my next visit to the big smoke.

The Honour Board was presented to the Shire by Cr Alexander Coupar Gibb (of "Meadowbank".) It was apparently made in 1917 with side panels either provided for additional enlistments or added very cleverly later. It would have hung in the council chamber of the old shire office near the bridge in Broadmeadows Township (Westmeadows)and then moved to the new shire offices on Twomey's "Glen Allan" near Pascoe Vale Rd circa 1928. Incidentally, the foundation stone of the new 1928 offices, including the name of Cr Rupert Hadfield (after whom Box Forest was named), did not seem to be on the wall of the later version as it was in my last inspection of the building. Hopefully it will be incorporated into the brand new City of Hume building next to the Hume Global Learning Centre.
