It has been my experience that some records can be quite loose with spelling. It is a combination of the literacy of the record taker and the record informant and in some cases the record transcriber.

Try using, where possible, a combination of letters and some wildcards.

Another possibility is that there is no record, especially in the days before compulsory registration.

Thanks for the input. Since there are 5 different spellings of our last name, this has been a challenge. I will try your suggestions. Jane
