WILLIAM THOMAS HUNTLEY OF "ROSCOE", THOMAS STREET, BRIGHTON EAST, VIC., AUST., AND THE BENTLEIGH CLUB.

Journal by itellya

Today, I attended a Kensington Kids reunion at the Bentleigh Club (Melway 68 B11) at Brighton East. There was a painting of an old mansion in the foyer with no detail, including why it had pride of place. I assumed that it had formerly occupied the site. As we were leaving, I noticed that the end of the building nearest Huntley St may have been part of the mansion. I told one of my friends that the mansion might have belonged to a member of the Huntley family, pioneers of Brighton and Red Hill, of which Tommy Bent's second wife was a member. Tommy had married Elizabeth Huntley in 1864.

The Wikipedia history of Bentleigh of course mentions Tommy after whom Bentleigh was named but included little other information. A google search revealed no mention of "Roscoe". However a trove search revealed that William Thomas Huntley and Thomas Bent were the executors of Elizabeth Bent* and that William Thomas Huntley lived at "Roscoe", Thomas St.,Brighton.**

If I recall correctly, the Bentleigh Club was formed in 1948 but there is no history of the club on the internet, a pity. Perhaps this might inspire the writing of one before those members who possess information about its early days pass away. The local council might also investigate the heritage value of the site and building.

Thomas St was probably named after Tommy Bent but Huntley St was probably named after his brother-in-law.

Itellya is researching local history on the Mornington Peninsula and is willing to help family historians with information about the area between Somerville and Blairgowrie. He has extensive information about Henry Gomm of Somerville, Joseph Porta (Victoria's first bellows manufacturer) and Captain Adams of Rosebud.

The Huntley family are my wife's ancestors. We have old photos that we think are of the Huntleys and so are interested if there are any family memebers still alive that could assist in our photo review. Here is the set: https://goo.gl/photos/Rm31b4VoaEJnNuDA9

MAIRS/HOPE/HUNTLEY FAMILIES

benhelenv, to post a link on family tree circles, so that people can click on it, you need to use the following process:
description
When you submit, the description appears in blue text.

This is tedious if you have many links in what you write, so another alternative is to type the link to put the link into bold type and tell readers to paste the link in bold type into their search bar.

Also, if you wish to send a private message to anyone who does reply to your request, click on their name where it appears in blue type, as yours does above, and then click on message.

benhelenv, The process I tried to describe ended up providing a stupid link to nothing so I'll send you a private message so I can talk you through the procedure on the phone if you wish.

I am not related to any of the above families but Bill Huntley helped me enormously with my research into the Red Hill area. Then living at Safety Beach with a huge portrait of Tommy Bent hanging on his lounge room wall, and aged over 91, he drove me around a huge area showing me the properties that the family had farmed. Bill was the son of Percy William Huntley, (born 1887 Brighton, died 1959 Hastings) who was a son of John Huntley Jnr and Mary, nee Hope.

After the death of her husband, Mary married John Shand, known by his friends as Peter (his second given name if I recall correctly.)

Bill told me that David Taylor Mairs was a champion rifleman who travelled Australia in the employ of I.C.A.,(under the name of Lee Nickman if I understand my scribbled notes correctly) like our version of Buffalo Bill, flogging their bullets, which as David showed just couldn't miss. Much detail about the Mairs family is in my journal:

By the way, Bill told me that his grandfather's brother, William Huntley, had a house in Thomas St Brighton. Thus William was the brother of John Huntley Jnr and son of John Huntley Snr and the house was "Roscoe", now the Bentleigh Club.
