Hi will have a look for you as I live up the road in stonebroom part of united benefice. . Cupitt is still a local name. I guess it will be st Leonard's church. Seeing the church warden on Tuesday at choir supper and will see what parish registers they have.
Kind regards
Maddy
Thank you so much Maddy - St Leonard's Church does feature largely in my tree, so I would presume it to be the church holding this info.
In thankful appreciation, ...... Helen
Hi helen
Turns out the early records are at Matlock in the county records but I should be able to have a look for you in the week. Its only over a few miles away Be back later.
Regards. Maddy
Thank you Maddy for giving up your time to help me with my research. I hope this doesn't involve you going too far out of your way ?? .... MANY THANKS ...Helen
Hi Helen
I didnt have complete success at Matlock. The registers were microfiche copies of the originals and very difficult to read in places. I looked in the years around 1777 but then I realised that you had said he married in 1779 so maybe you meant c1757 for birth. Nothing there so I went further back and found a birth/baptism entry for 9th September 1739 for a William Cupid son of Augustus Cupid who may be an earlier Augustus Cupid. Also a 1737 entry Oct 23 for George son of George Cupid. There were other Cupid and Cupits in the registers, I think the spelling is interchangeable. The writing and the reproduction is dreadful in some but gets better towards the end of the eighteenth century.
I then found a George Cupid born/baptised November 1757 (he could have been born earlier and not baptised til November)but very difficult to work out the name of the father. However again possibly an earlier member of the Cupit family, so looks likely there is a George b 1737 who then had a George born 1757. I got a photograph of the 1757 birth on my iPad and can send it to you if you send me your email address - I have no idea how to upload photos on this site.
I kept looking and covered about 30 years but I couldnt find any sign of George Cupit's marriage to Mary Wicks, you said it was Shirland but I wonder if she came from another Parish and the marriage would be there?
Finally I found a very clear copy of the marriage of Austin Augustus to Mary Siddall dated 1768 and I have a good photograph of that also.
But still no sign of George birth or marriage. I could try Morton church another time for you and see if he was baptised there, Shirland Higham and Morton are very intermingled but I didnt have time to go through Morton as well this time.
If you send me your email address I will email the two photographs and if you have any more information do send it and I will be happy to have another look for you next time I am in Matlock.
Its not far and I am researching some local history so I do need to go there from time to time.
Kind regards
Maddy
Just to help you out, our member 'Marlin1945' has all the dates and places on his journal William Cupitt 1600s
I think it was 1796 that George married Mary Wicks. I've seen many trees, and all have the date as 1797. Here are my reasons for believing it to be 1796. The marriage occured around the time George was given a conditional pardon for desertion and sent to nsw as a guard on the convict ship 'GANGES'. (he states on the 1828 Census that he arrived on the 'Ganges.") He arrived with Mary, on the 2 June 1797 and their first child William Augustus was born in Windsor on the 3 October 1797. The reason I believe he married before 1797 is because the Ganges departed Portsmouth in August 1796.
Hi Maddy and Janilye ... I have just checked out my info on George Cupit ( b/ 9th March, 1777 ) It seems likely that he married Mary Wicks on 9th March,1797 in Shirland, Derbyshire - then they migrated to Australia, arriving here on 2nd June, 1797. But the " Ganges" left London in 1796 - did they really get married aboard the ship ? Or did Mary somehow get transported to the ship while on route ? So many questions surround this mysterious Mary Wicks !
Maddy, concerning your research ...
(1) I have a William Cupitt( b/ 9th September,1739)son of Austin Cupit and Rebecca Basford
(2) Then there is a George Cupit( b/1st November,1757) son of Edward Cupit ( who I cannot find any info on ) and Hannah Hudson
Thank you Janilye for your input re my family search, I printed out a copy of the ancestry line from the website you gave me and have clarified my info.....thanks to you both, ...Helen
Don't ask me where I saw it because it's just one of those things you see when researching something else and I did not really take a lot of notice apart from my mind registering the name but not the details. Try Mary Wiggins rather than Wicks.
I can only 'guess' her stepfather was Wicks and she was born Wiggins.
The Cupitt family in Australia has been extensively researched by Ercic Cupitt who has written several histories of the Australian family - the George Cupitt/Mary Wicks link
Thank you Peter4, I have already been in contact with Eric and got a copy of his book on the Cupitt family it gave me a lot of info but I was more concerned in getting photos and copies of vital documents. Thank you anyway ...Helen
