We regret to have to record the death of Mrs Cammock, a very old resident of the Maharahara district, which occurred yesterday. The deceased lady was one of the earliest settlers of the district and had attained the age of 63 years. During the past few years the late Mrs Cammock had patiently borne a very painful illness. She is survived by her husband and a grown-up family, who are residents in various parts of the Dominion.
ALEXANDER CAMMOCK died 7 April 1916 aged 78
Hawke's Bay Tribune, 12 April 1916
DEATH Of A PIONEER Another link with the early settlement of this district snapped on Friday evening when Mr Alexander Cammock, one of the pioneer settlers of Kiritaki district, was called home after living seventy-eight years. Deceased, who had been suffering from a weak heart for some time past, went to Dannevirke about a fortnight ago to reside with his son in Matthew street and died at his residence on Friday evening. Mr Cammock, born in County Down, Ireland, came out to New Zealand in the old Montmorency, which caught fire in the Napier roadstead on her next trip and was beached opposite Hardinge road, where a portion of her hull, in stormy weather, was visible till very recent years. After working on the stone quarries in Shakespeare road, in the early days of Napier, deceased went to live at Hastings, following farming and contracting pursuits and some years later he acquired a holding at Kiritaki, when the now prosperous settlement was practically virgin bush and carved out a home for himself. Mr Cammock had lived there ever since - a respected pioneer settler. His wife predeceased him five years ago and he is survived by one daughter - Mrs Proffit(Mary Jane)of Whangamomona and nine sons - Messrs E. Cammock(Edward), Dannevirke; C. Cammock(Charles), Kiritaki; W. Cammock(William), Foxton; H.(Harry) and F. Cammock(Frank), Woodville; A. Cammock(Alexander), Hastings; J. Cammock,(Jack), New Plymouth; J. Cammock(James), Whangamomona and D. Cammock(David) who went to Samoa with the Main Expeditionary Force.
The funeral took place on Sunday last
