Has any-one researching the Ordish family any idea how their daughter Eliza and her husband, Thomas Henry Brown, became Herbalists?

It is an unknown occupation in the Brown family history. Thomas and Eliza are both shown as Herbalists in the 1893 electoral roll and in the early 1900's were operating from "Thomas Brown - Herbalist" in New Plymouth, Opunake and possibly Stratford.
