Any one related to Lucy Murcott (1886-1938)?

Question by lilcav

Am having problems with my family tree (RUSS) stopping here as the father of her child is not registered. I have her daughter Annie (18 May 1886-5 dec 1967) registered at River Tce School and also a brother Henry being registered on the same days and the parent/guardian for both showing as George Murcott (Lucy's father) in one year and William Murcott (Lucy's brother) in another. Records show she remained unmarried until her death but two illegitimate children seems a bit unusual to me. Anyone who can cast any light on this please - with some sort of verification? Many thanks.

Hi there. My name is Judy Wall (nee Wilkinson). Lucy was my great-great grandmother. Lucy was born 1861/1862 and died 27th October 1935. Annie Russ was my great-grandmother. Annie was born on 18 May 1886 and died on 5th December 1967 (putting her socks on! I remember.) Her daughter Daisy Violet Wilkinson (nee Russ), my grandmother. I have came to the same stumbling block as you. They won't give out the father's name of Annie...I tried! I have never been aware of another child she had...how bizarre! I have a printoot copy of Lucy's death staying her parents were George and Susannah Murcott (nee Faulkner). I also have a print-out of Annie's birth registration. A letter accompanied that saying they were unable to provide the hand-written format as legislation had been passed since the event and that they deleted information because of this Legislative Act. I also phoned BDM in Wellington and they said I would need to change the Act by Law and that is not possible. How sad is that? You can contact me via email if you wish: judyandgill@xtra.co.nz
Bye for now...hope I have been of some help.

Hi there. I am a very distant in-law.

Lucy Murcott apparently had four children:
George Edward 3/12/78-20/5/52 (1879/15276-1952/22536)
Ernest 15/5/81-4/1/47 (1947/17900)
Annie 18/5/86-5/12/67 (1886/6842-1967/46270)
Henry 5/11/88-25/8/51 (1951/35311)
Only two of the births seem to be officially registered. Ernest may have been born in 1882 rather than 1881: sources conflict.

There is a very good pedigree resource file on Familysearch.org: "Pedigree Resource File," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/2:2:333F-WV6). I particularly recommend reading the various notes. It is also worthwhile reading the report of the prosecution to William Rowe in the Nelson Evening Mail on 11 June 1879 (paperspast.natlib.govt.nz).

There is some useful information at National Archives. Ernest Murcott's WWI service file gives his date and place of birth, and his attestation states bluntly that his father was "Not Known".

Lucy's probate file is also available through National Archives. Her last Will dated 29 June 1928 left her entire estate to her granddaughter Gladys Mabel, wife of Norman William Hardyment. The estate was worth 446 pounds 16 shillings and ninepence. The will is signed with her mark, it being explained that Lucy Murcott was an illiterate spinster at her death.

"Lucy Murcott Place" in Nelson is presumably named after her.
