Any suggestions for tracking down my grandfather, Harold Stafford Lee, possible great grandson of General Charles Lee?
He left my mom's family when she was 10 in 1936, and we have no previous history, nor do we know what happened to him. From 1930 census (m. to Edna G. Lee, in Shirley MA) he was born in Ontario in 1883, and was previously married. It says he was naturalized and served in World War I. His marriage certificate says his prior address was Memphis TN. He was a chef, and my mother believes he might have joined the Merchant Marines after he left.
From family stories, he may have been descended from General Charles Lee, who took a Mohawk wife in the 1750s and had two children. The Mohawks were resettled in northern NY and Ontario and Quebec. He told my mother stories of visiting the reservation and that she was related to the Mohawks.
I've read through Indian census, and done all the obvious on ancestry.com. I checked Social Security death records and did not find him.
Is the next step to do onsite searches - say in Massachusetts and Ontario? I've been using internet resources and books, and family info.
Thanks for whatever help you can give me.
