Anyone have news of families of 5 brothers named BEDFORD from London to NY early 1900s ?
Five of the six sons of Thomas Benjamin BEDFORD (1850-1937), all born in London England, migrated to NY USA end 1800s/early 1900s. The sixth son remained in London. He was my grandfather.
I seek to complete the family tree for the families in the USA. They were :
1? BEDFORD THOMAS BENJAMIN (1871-1962) piano maker in Brooklyn in 1900. His 1st wife Julia ELLIS stayed in England with their son Thomas BEDFORD. She remarried before 1901. The piano maker's second wife Sarah UNKNOWN apparently gave him no children. She died in 1934 at Richmond Hill, Queens Co, NY. He died 1962 at Mastic Beach Long Island, NY leaving everything to a couple of neighbors (and nothing to his family).
2? BEDFORD DANIEL HENRY (1872-1943) vice-president of a printing firm in NY. His 1st wife Eliza BOWERY gave him a dtr Mabel born in England 1894. The couple separated and Eliza died aged 27 in 1899. Mabel was probably taken into her mother's family in England. Daniel rejoined his brother in Brooklyn in 1901, then married Margaret WYLIE in 1902. The printing business in NY was a success and he became quite rich after 35 years working with his in-laws. They lived firstly at Teaneck NJ then at Forest Hills, Long Island NY. Children : 1?Daniel H. (ca1906-1949) printer who succeeded his father as vice-president of the family business, 2? Arete M. (ca1908-after1949), we do not know if she married. 3? Edward T. (1909-2001) became vice-president of SAKS Fifth Avenue, retired in 1973, died 2001 age 91 leaving 5 children, 9 grandsons and 3 gt-grandchildren. His wife Eugenia n?e VAUGHAN had died earlier. We seek news of the children Diana (ca1941), Sharon (ca1944), Edward T Jr (ca 1950) and Phoebe. The fifth was not named in the Obit dated 2001. 4? Phoebe : she was probably the third child of this family, born shortly after WW2 (late 1940s). Her married surname was DUFFIELD and in 2001 she was living in Grand Haven, Michigan. We know nothing more about her.
3? BEDFORD ROBERT GEORGE (ca1884-1961), compositor in printing works. He migrated from London to NY in 1908 with his English wife Florence n?e SENYARD after an initial visit to NY in 1905. Florence died in 1930 age 49. Their only son, Robert W. (1912-1998) was only 18 yrs old and he became a chicken farmer. Robert George re-married with Emma Clara EVERS (1901-1979) who gave him a son Edward (1931-2002) but we know very little about him except that he died age 71 in Valley Stream, Nassau Co. Long Island NY.
4? BEDFORD GEORGE (1886-1979) was initially a piano maker. He migrated to NY in 1907, and by 1917 was a self-employed piano and phonograph repairer in Brooklyn, married with two children. He was not called upon to serve in the army in WW1. The family moved to Ontario, Canada at about that time. He set up a business as construction contractor. It is said he was very deaf. He died in Kamloops BC age 93 in 1979 leaving three children : George Howard (1914), Iris (no date) and Ethelwynne (no date). The children of George Howard Bedford are Maureen, Rodney and Geoffrey (no dates for them). Maureen lives on a ranch near Kamloops in 2010. Geoffrey is Maureen's twin brother.
5? BEDFORD WILLIAM (1888-1965) became a successful manufacturer of small pianos and proprietor of a music store in Brooklyn NY. Migrated from London to NY in 1907 after a first visit in 1905. His first wife Elise (known as Elsie in the USA) was English but their dtr Dorothy was born in NJ USA ca 1913. We believe that Elise/Elsie died or divorced shortly after their trip to visit the family with Dorothy in 1930. William re-married with Arline UNKNOWN in late 1930. She gave him a son William born in 1933 who was thought to have become a medical doctor, but attempts to contact him failed (no answer). William Sr died in Brooklyn in1965 and Arline died in 1973 in Florida. Dorothy may have married a Mr KENNY (mentioned on Obit of her father).
The 6th son,. BEDFORD FREDERICK CHARLES (1874-1957) stayed in England. He visited the USA in 1920 for a month, but decided he preferred London where he had his own successful shoe-making business. He had started life as a cobbler age 11 yrs, owning his own shop a few years later, then three shops, then a factory making shoes in the KIngs Cross area of central London, England. He married Frances "Fanny" AUSTIN and they had nine children (6 boys and 3 girls). The descendants look forward to learning more about their north American "cousins".
