Press, 15 May 1918 FIRE - OLD AGE PENSIONERS INJURED
At 4.26 yesterday afternoon, a fire occurred in a five-roomed brick cottage, 20 Westwood terrace, off Salisbury street, occupied by four old age pensioners named Robert Kingan (aged 84), James Renshaw (78), Frank Smith (65) and Emmanuel Gustafson (74). The outbreak was due to the upsetting of a kerosene stove, on which the evening meal was being cooked, and in a few moments the building, an old one, was a mass of flames. Kingan was rather severely singed about the face in making his escape, but Renshaw was more unfortunate, his retreat being cut off, and only the timely arrival of the Fire Brigade averted a tragedy

of interest Ada died of a diseased liver, called a 'gin liver' and the heart was 'weak & flabby'. It was recorded that alcohol was the only thing she cared for. The nurse at the hospital stated that when brought in Ada was in a very dirty state, in a semi-conscious condition and clawing at her throat a good deal. She put her to bed and gave her some whisky and soda! She did not recover but died ten minutes later!!!

* Donald MUNDAY (1836-1910)
12 March 1910 aged 74
Star, 24 January 1908 Hannah Farrell and Ellen Riley were charged with having stolen L2 6s in money and a flask of whisky, the property of Donald Munday, at Sumner, on January 22. It appeared that Munday, who is an inmate of the Ashburton Old Men's Home, was having a holiday at Sumner, and was sleeping off the effects of drink on the Lyttelton Road. The accused saw him and as he was an old decrepit man, they relieved him of his possessions. Both pleaded "Not guilty" but Constable Hampton gave evidence that he found Munday on the road, and heard his story, and that Munday afterwards identified accused.
