The 'VOSS / FLANZE (or PHRANZE)' Family

Frederick Joseph Herman VOSS born 1830 the Grand Duchy of Mecklenberg-Schwerin, Germany. N.B. Fred Voss' father -name unknown- was a farmer who hired himself out as a mercenary soldier under Napoleon. In 1812 it is said that he went with Napoleon's "Grand Armee" to Russia, on the infamous march to Moscow. [Source: Obit of F.Voss 'Inverell Times' June 26, 1936] Fred Voss married in 1859 Alshue Germany to Johanna Doratea FLANZE born perhaps 1821 Holstein, Germany {not proven} and died 1882 'Clarevaulx', registered Glen Innes NSW. Her parent's names are now known as Henry FLANZE and Dorothea unknown.

Shortly after arrival in C1855 via ship "Daniel Ross" ex Hamburg, family was obliged by the Australian Govt of the time to undergo naturalisation, and to anglicise their German names. Family made their way up from Port of Sydney in colony of NSW to vicinity of Moree, Gunnedah and Narrabri. First the family lived on 'Gurley Station' where Frederick worked as a shepherd and farmer. Later the family moved up to the Glen Innes area.

Fred & Dorothy VOSS had 6 children, 1.Otte Nickelark Marks, a twin to sister, 2.Dor - both born Germany, 3.Frederick b 1856 Gurley (my ancestor), 4. Hammon Henry b1862 Weewaa a twin of 5.Anna Dorothea, and 6.Emma Christina b1862 Wellingrove.

Their first child also known as Nicholas Otto Marcus VOSS married in 1881 at Glen Innes to Susan PAGE, daughter of William & Ellen PAGE. They had 10 known children - 1.Otto, 2.Mary, 3.Ellen, 4.Ada, 5.Frederick, 6.John, 7.Mabel, 8.Henry, 9.Emily and 10.Richard VOSS.

Second child - we think that Dor Voss died young, possibly in Germany before the family emigrated to Australia, verification required.

Third child, Fred VOSS (my ancestor) married in 1883 at Glen Innes to Mary WEBBER b 1863 Bundaberg, Qld. She was the daughter of Johannes Heinrich WEBER b 1829 Dickschied Prussia d 1902 Lambs Valley NSW, and Elizabeth ORTH b 1835 Roppershain Hesse Prussia, d 1914 Lambs Valley NSW. Note: I have been provided with ORTH ancestry back to the 1600s by fellow researcher Graham Shirra, USA.

Note: The Weber/Webber family also arrived in Australia via the same ship as the Voss family - the Daniel Ross the voyage taking 129 days.

Fred & Mary Voss had 6 children - 1.John William 1884, 2.Frederick Henry 1887, 3.Henry Frederick 1888 (my ancestor), 4.Ernest Francis 1890, 5.Caspar Orth 1896 and 6.Blanche Wilhelmina Nita VOSS 1906.

N.B. Sub-names include: Guthiel, Weiderman, Hastenpflug, Seigner, Hoffmeyer, Cranz, Lowerman, Curtze, Lieberman, Kurtz and Rohleder.

Fourth child, Hammon Henry De Voss married Maude BEDDY in 1904 Sydney.

Fifth child, Anna Dorothea Voss married 1878 Wellingrove to Edward Augustus PIETSCH and had 3 children, Emily 1881, Henry 1883 and Edward 1888 NSW.

Their lastborn Emma Christina Voss married 1883 Glen Innes to Joseph COLE and had 9 known children - Joseph, William, Ernest, Arnold, Darice, Norman, Agnus, Amy and Herman COLE all born Inverell NSW.

If there are any connections out there, please don't hesitate to write to me. I also have my tree on Genes Reunited at which site names can be freely searched, however there is a small fee to host your tree. It's a brilliant website!

Regards,
Alison, QLD, Australia.

Photograph below is of my ancestor Henry MOST - he worked as a Shepherd.

Note: I think the MOST surname may have originally been MOEST/MOIST or even MOSTYN.

I have uploaded my birth, death, marriage and baptismal Certificates at this site Certificate Sharing.

Hi Alison,

I'm not directly descended from your Voss family, but there maybe a connection by marriage. My g-grandfather was Samuel Maurer (brother of the George Maurer you mention in relation to your Pywell branch).

Their sister, Cecilia Johanna Maurer, (b.6.6.1868, King's Plains, NSW, daughter of John Maurer & Helena Quetscher) married Herman Henry Voss (known as Harry) on 29.2.1888 at the Waterloo Hotel, near Glen Innes. Herman Henry was born on 16.11.1862, the son of Frederick & Dorothea Voss. The witnesses to the marriage were her brother, Samuel Maurer & her sister, Christina Susannah Maurer.

Their children were:
Herbert Charles, b. 30.12.1888
Norman Henry, b. 1.8.1892
Archibald H., b. 1892 (presumably a twin)
Vida Lillian, b. 8.11.1894
Christina Hannah, b. 24.9.1890
Dorothy Helena, b. 18.8.1898
Ethel G., b. 1901
Daphne C., b. 1905

These records were given to me by a descendent of Joseph Maurer (the eldest of the Maurer children) about 20 years ago. He compiled them from the card index at the Beardy Museum, Glen Innes.

He also noted that:
Henry Richard Voss, son of Otto Voss & Susan Page, died from Cholera aged 7 weeks & 5 days on 20.2.1897 at Rockfield, Wellingrove;

and Mabel May Voss, b.4.9.1895, daughter of Otto Voss & Susan Page, died at King's Plains, 16.9.1895, aged 12 days old.

I hope this is of some interest/help.

Regards, Brendan

Dear Brendan, Hi there. How absolutely wonderful of you to provide this information. I appreciate it thank you.

Now I know whom my late grandmother Ethel VOSS 1916~2001 was named after!

Alison
VOSS descendant.

by moogirl on 2007-08-29 03:07:02

Hi Alison,
I too am a VOSS descendant, also with a grandmother called Ethel Voss ( perhaps who your grandmother was named for). Her name was Ethel Grace ( as mentioned in the above comment by Brendan, daughter of Herman Henry and Cecilia Johanna Maurer ) and she married James Norman Stafford on 12-11-1927 at St James Church in Burwood NSW. Ethel died in 1958 but little information was passed down of her family.

I have just started researching so hope I am on the right track but have found your info fascinating.

I will be adding information to the site when I have details together.

Cheers
Karen

Dear Karen, I'm very happy to meet you in cyberspace. If you click on my username and click on contact, send me a personal message and I shall reply with my personal email address. I don't generally like displaying it on the internet as there are people with those webcrawler packages that look for email addresses and then we end up being spammed with heaps of junk emails.

I generally haven't come across another VOSS descendant before. Have much information all stored on my hard-drive and stories passed down to me from my lovely late grandma Ethel Mary Voss 1916~2001.

Bye for now,
Alison.

As I have been researching my genealogy since 1980, I have quite a lot of detailed information, but I am always looking for more photographs. Please would you be so kind as to attach any old pictures to journals here.

There are many other descendants out there of Anna & Jack Most and we would all be appreciative of more information on Henry and Henrietta's origins (including the Brosers/Broselles many spellings) etc.

Thanking you. Alison, also a great granddaughter of Harry & Elsie Voss.

Hi Allycat,

It looks like its been a while since there was correspondence via this link but just in case...

I've just started researching my mother's family tree, and found out that her father's mother was Ellen Voss, daughter of Otto (Nicholas) & Susan (Page) Voss.

I just wanted to say thank you for sharing your research. I've been told countless times that my eyes are distinctly from a northern European area so I was particularly excited about finding a German (I now know Prussian) ancestor amidst my predominantly English ancestry.

Thank you again.

Regards,
Dale

Dear Dale, Hi. I can't believe I almost missed your comment. Will send you a personal message as we appear to be 5th cousins or something like that. I have more information in my GEDCOM on my hard drive than produced here, especially about your maternal PAGE lines. I've found out that Susan (Otto's wife) her parents were William SPATCH and Ellen KEY. Ellen was married three times, spouse names: 1.Spatch, 2.Hazelgrove, 3.Page. That's why you have Susan Page.
