"AVERLEY" house, Ballykelly, Ireland - Home of the Atkinson family

Journal by Carolbea

Searching for a photograph of the house "AVERLEY".

The ATKINSON's of Ballykelly, Londonderry, Ireland lived in a house called "AVERLEY". It has been described as a beautiful large home in the main street of Ballykelly. The property stood there until 2001 when it was sold to a company called Nicholl Fuels and the site is now one for petrol station.

I am looking for a photograph of the house and also interested in how the house was named?

I would try Google Earth archives, and also perhaps The National Trust. And since you mention a company purchased the property, it's entirely within the realms of possibility that someone may have photographed the original house. Or alternatively what about local family history groups in the area?

Another idea is to look at the Rootschat site, register as a new user, link is exactly for their Derry/Londonderry childboard. I'd recommend perusing their resources and links first to see if there's already historical accounts written about what you are seeking.

Best wishes,
EDITOR.
