DIPTHERIA - This disease has been very prevalent in the vicinity of Rangiora during the past few weeks. It has, in nearly every instance, attacked children and its ravages have proved fatal in several instances. A farmer named Barrell, residing near the Woodend road, has lost three of his children from the above cause during a very short space of time and it is exceedingly fortunate that the disease has not as yet show itself in the populous part of Rangiora.

.. Charlie Barrell was a NZ politician of the labour Party. He became a farmer but later found employment with the New Zealand Railways Department and eventually qualified as an engineer. In 1902 he married Annie Jane Malvina Quinlon. He then was the manager of branches of Booth Macdonald and Co, Ltd at New Plymouth, Auckland and Invercargill. He then became the Town Clerk and Harbourmaster at Kawhia. He later moved to Hamilton. He represented the Hamilton electorate from 1935, when he defeated Sir Alexander Young of the Reform Party. In the 1938 election, he defeated Albert William Grant of the National Party. In 1943, he was defeated by National's Frank Findlay. He unsuccessfully contested the Hamilton seat again in a 1945 by-election. In 1940 he was appointed a member of the Auckland Harbour Board to fill a vacancy, but chose not to stand for re-election in 1941 stating that the war effort was taking a heavy demand on his time and he could not give warranted attention to the board's affairs. Charlie was a Social Crediter and later became the president of the Hamilton Social Credit Association. In later life he was the patron of the Waikato Trotting Club. He died in Auckland 14 Jan 1958 aged 77. He was survived by his wife, son and two daughters.

.. Raymond served in WWI as Sergeant 11/971. He enlisted from Wellington. He fought at Gallipoli. After the war he was chosen to be part of the Dunsterforce (aka Hush Hush Army), an Allied military force which carried out special operations in the Southern Caucasus and Northern Iran during WWI, commanded by General Dunster in early 1918. This force was made up from soldiers from the Dominion who were all experts in their particular fields. Raymond was an arms expert. His NOK on enlistment was his father Abraham in Mangatainoka.

BARRELL - On January 16, 1938, at Rawene, Abraham Barrell, J.P., of Pahiatua, late of Rangiora, the beloved husband of the late Sarah Ann Barrell; in his 86th year.
OBITUARY
Mr Abraham Barrell. Following a long illness, the death has occurred, in a hospital at Hokianga, of Mr Abraham Barrell, at the age of 86. He was one of the oldest and most highly respected residents at Pahiatua. At the time of his death Mr Barrell was visiting his daughter.
Mr Barrell was born at Bury St Edmonds, Suffolk, England, in 1842, being the eldest son of the late Mr and Mrs Samuel Barrell who came to New Zealand in 1864(sic 1855), landing at Lyttelton. Mr Barrell, senr., took up land in the Rangiora district.
Flour-milling was Mr A. Barrell's first calling, being apprenticed as a boy to one of the Rangiora mills. Some years later he joined the firm of Messrs Boyd and Keir builders and contractors, of Rangiora, by whom he was employed until he left for the North Island in 1891.
Mr Barrell went first to Mangatainoka, later taking up building in Pahiatua, where he put up various buildings. He married at Rangiora and there were four children of the union when the family shifted to the North Island. Four more children were born to Mr and Mrs Barrell at Mangatainoka. Mr Barrell carried on with his building activities in the district for several years, when he turned his attention to the butchery trade, setting up a small shop at Mangatainoka. Later he entered into partnership with Mr George Early, in a shop in Pahiatua, which was conducted most successfully. Retiring from business in 1910, Mr Barrell disposed of his interest in the butchery to take over a farm property he possessed at Mangatainoka. Some five years later he gave up active farming to live in retirement in Pahiatua. He had been a very keen rifle shot in his younger days.
While living at Mangatainoka Mr Barrell served on the Pahiatua County Council and was chairman of the Domain Board and the Library Committee, besides being president of the Mangatainoka Athletic Society, of which he was one of the founders.
During his residence in Pahiatua he served for a number of years on the Borough Council. He was a member of the Pahiatua A. and P. Association, of which he was president, later being elected a life member.
Ever since he had resided in the district Mr Barrell had been a keen bowler, his association with the Pahiatua Club dating back over 22 years. The club made him an honorary life member some years ago in recognition of his long service as patron and green supervisor.
Mr Barrell was a Past Master of Lodge Tararua and was a member of the Loyal Mangatainoka Lodge, which he helped to found, being the first N.G.
For over 40 years Mr Barrell had served as a Justice of the Peace.
Mr Barrell, who was a member of the Anglican Church, was a strong supporter of the St Mark's Church at Mangatainoka, helping in a large way to have the building established. For many years his eldest daughter acted as organist at St Mark's, serving in that capacity till she married.
Mrs Barrell predeceased her husband ten years ago and a daughter, Mrs Wotherspoon (Frances), died about four years ago. Left to mourn their loss are Messrs Charles Barrell, M.P., Hamilton; Leonard Barrell of Hokianga and Mrs A. J. Ebbett (Gwendoline) of Lake Tekapo and Messrs Raymond Barrell of Morrinsville, Leslie Barrell of Whakatane, Mrs H. Anderson (Stella) of Kaeo and Mrs C. W. Miller (Ruby Annie), of Hataitai, Wellington

In Aug 1917 Arthur Frederick Barrell, a teacher at Elmwood School, asked for a further adjournment until the First Division had been exhausted and stated that his wife had been in ill-health for some time. Mr Jones, chairman of the Elmwood School Committee, asked that Mr Barrell should be totally exempted, or at least until the end of the year, to allow him to go on with the teaching of his class of 68 sixth standard pupils. If Mr Barrell was taken away the chances of these pupils would be seriously jeopardized, The appeal was adjourned since die.

In Aug 1918 At the Military Service Board. Some time was occupied in consideration of an appeal lodged by Mr Barrell, undertaker, for the retention of the services of his son, Charles Weston Barrell, a married man with two children. Mr Salter said that Mr Barrell was a funeral contractor in a very large way of business, having contracts for several large institutions and conducting about one-third of the funerals in Christchurch. He found it very difficult to get anyone to take up the work, as it was very distasteful. There were two sons in the business, each of whom was paid £4 5s per week. There was one son in camp and another was at the front. The contracts were yearly ones. He asked that the board should give time to secure another man. A sine die adjournment was granted

.. William & Annie were sheepfarmers at 'Tiratahi', Eketahuna, North Wairarapa. He kept diaries and had early 20th century maps of Wellington, Hawkes Bay & Taranaki & 1905 Land Commission map, drawn on a published map, the annotations depict nine Land Commission areas including New Plymouth, Uruti, Mangaroa, Purangi, Whangamomona, Strathmore, Eltham, Hawera and Matapouri. A reference chart indicates the number of 'Land for Settlement' tenants and ordinary Crown tenants in each centre. These were donated to the Alexander Turnbull Turnbull in the 1960s by Miss Elizabeth Matheson (1890-1978).
.. Drawn on a base map, the annotations show information related to the dairies of William B. Matheson and his farm Tiratahi. The map annotations show Tiratahi Estate as 1 mile from Rongomai and 6 miles from Eketahuna. It details various extensions to the farm and lists neighbouring farmers. Shows the usual route of Tiratahi to Woodbank and from Flag Creek or Tinui from Tiratahi and trip details over newly formed roads. The annotations refer to information dated 1886 - 1919. Annotations link to a handwritten reference key listing Matheson's neighbours along the Mangaone River, including Harding, Croft, W. Locoa (later Waldin), C. Evans, Sykes, Martin, Nichol, Cooper, Walsh (later H. Cooper), Bourkes, Attewell, Slattery, Chulow, Davie, Drew, Stonewigg, J. Lowes, Stewart Bridge (later Godfrey, Suisted).
Also includes biro annotation regarding three properties farmed by descendants of William Speedy (Pipibank, Woodbank and Burnview).

Mr Cecil Wm. Miller (Wellington) and Miss Ruby Barrell (Pahiatua), youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs A. Barrell, late of Mangatainoka, were married a few days ago at the local Anglican Church. Rev H. M. Monaghan, M.A., completed the union. Honeymoon at Napier. Bridegroom was in Samoan, Egyptian and Gallipoli campaigns.

ANDERSON-BARRELL At St Mark's (Anglican) Church, Mangatainoka on Wednesday, the wedding was celebrated of Miss Stella Gertrude Barrell, third daughter of Mr and Mrs A. Barrell, old and respected residents of Mangatainoka and Hemming C. Anderson, third son of Mr and Mrs J. P. Anderson of Halcombe. The bride was given away by her father. She was attired in a very dainty dress of ivory crepe de chine, trimmed with swansdown, pearl and crystal ornaments and shadow lace. She wore the usual veil and orange blossoms and carried a sheaf of choice chrysanthemums and asparagus ferns. There were two bridesmaids, Miss Ruby Barrell, sister of the bride and Miss Annie Anderson, sister of the bridegroom. Miss Barrell wore a frock of lemon-coloured chiffon tafetta with Oriental and fur trimmings and mob cap and belt of pale blue tulle. Miss Anderson wore a reseda green chiffon taffetta dress, with Oriental and white fur trimmings and mob cap to match. Each carried a handsome bouquet of white chrysanthemums and heath. Mr H. Stunnell, of Foxton, acted as best man and Mr H. Coston attended as groomsman. Mrs Barrell, mother of the bride wore a navy blue costume, black hat with plumes and black wolf furs. Mrs Anderson, mother of the bridegroom, wore a brown silk-striped poplin dress, black toque and black feather ruffle. Mrs Wotherspoon presided at the organ and played the Wedding march as the newly-married couple left the church.
After the ceremony, which was performed by the Rev R. Hermon, the bridal party and guests were driven to "Totaranui" the residence of the bride's parents, where the wedding breakfast was held. The usual toasts were honoured and felicitous speeches made.
The young couple were the recipients of a large number of handsome and useful presents, including several cheques. The bridegroom's present to each bridesmaid was gold wreath brooches set with jewels. The bride presented the bridegroom with a silver cigarette case.
Mr and Mrs Anderson subsequently left by the express train for the North on a honeymoon tour. The bride travelled in a smart tailor-made navy blue costume and black and tango velvet hat. She wore a lovely set of grey squirrel furs, the gift of the bridegroom.

Vera Agnes Barrell (1904-1991)

married James Ernest Strachan (1883-1973) in Waikuku Beach, near Rangiora, on Jan 1934, as his 2nd wife. They had 2 sons.
* James was born in Dunedin, a son of James Cochrane Strachan, a tailor & Helen Moir. At the age of 15 he became a pupil-teacher and entered Dunedin Training College in 1903. He also took classes at the University of Otago, graduating MA with honours in mental science in 1905. From 1906 to 1910 he was an assistant master in the secondary department of Lawrence District High School and from 1911 to 1917 science master at Gore High School. In 1917 he was appointed principal of Rangiora High School, from where he was able to complete a BSc at Canterbury College in 1921. On 2 Sep 1914 at Lawrence, he had married Mary Irene Chalmers. They had a daughter, 1915-2007 Irene Dorothy Strachan (+ Hawker).
On taking up his appointment at Rangiora, James immediately began introducing reforms to the school's curriculum and organisation, aimed at creating a self-contained and self-governing community of learners. He believed that the school should reflect the community in which it was located and that a curriculum composed solely of professional subjects disadvantaged pupils not academically inclined. He gave more emphasis to existing courses in agriculture, home science and commerce to supplement the traditional professional courses. In 1926 he introduced his 'organic curriculum', which included a central core of science, technology, fine arts and sociology. It was, in part, intended to inculcate social skills such as critical thinking and citizenship.
He was a notable amateur radio expert, credited with having sent NZ's first radio signal (the length of a back garden in Dunedin). He was also chairman of the reception committee that met Charles Kingsford Smith after his epic trans-Tasman flight in 1928.

It is with regret we record the death of Mrs Susan Barrell, mother of Mr A. Barrell, which took place at the residence of the latter at Mangatainoka this morning, at the ripe age of 80 years. The deceased lady was born at Hartest, Suffolk, in the year 1825 and came out to this colony with her husband in the emigrant ship Grasmere, which arrived at Lyttelton 50 years ago to-day. She leaves a husband and family of four - two sons and two daughters, namely: Mr A. Barrell (Abraham) of Mangatainoka; Mr M. Barrell (Mark) of Rangiora, Canterbury; Mrs R. Baillie (Agnes), Ashley Bank, Canterbury and Mrs C. Todd (Alice Agnes) of Mangaroko, Taranaki. There are several grand-children.

The death occurred'at Mangatainoka on January 5, of a very old colonist in the person of Mr Samuel Barrell, at the advanced age of 85 years. The deceased gentlemen, who was very highly respected by all who knew him, was one of the Canterbury pilgrims, having arrived in Lyttelton over fifty-six years ago in the 'Grasmere', the first emigrant ship (? see headstone note). For the past eleven or twelve years the late Mr Barrell, whose wife predeceased him six years ago, had been living with his son, Mr A. Barrell, of Mangatainoka.
Their HEADSTONE reads: In memory of one of the original Canterbury pilgrims by arriving in Lyttelton 1855 on the "Grasmere", the first immigrant ship(?). Unsure why that is written because of course, the first ship was the 'Charlotte Jane' which arrived in Lyttelton in the morning of 16 Dec 1850 and the Randolph arrived in the afternoon. The 'Sir George Seymour' arrived the following day and the 'Cressy' on 27th. The 'Grasmere' arrived 4 May 1855, there were more than 35 immigrant ships into Lyttelton before her.
