... CALDER, On January 5th, 1901, at the Westport Hospital, Gordon Malcolm, deeply beloved and only son of J. M. and C. E. Calder, aged 18 years and 1 month
... A SAD BEREAVEMENT - WESTPORT, Mr and Mrs J. M. Calder, of this city, have just sustained a sad loss, attended by peculiarly distressing circumstances. A day or two before Christmas their only son, Gordon, a fine young fellow, about eighteen years of age, left Nelson with a companion of about equal age, Claude Barltrop, to walk overland from Belgrove to Westport (distance of about 125 miles/200km). The journey was safely accompished, but young Calder arrived with a bad foot, and by a mischance the luggage of both youths, sent on by steamer, had gone astray. Putting up at a lodging house, Calder, not being well and suffering from the bad foot, was attended by his young friend, but his condition not improving, a medical man was called in and his removal to the Hospital ordered. Matron Hayward and Dr MacKenzie attended him night and day. The greatest efforts were made to save his life. On Thursday last a telegram was received by his parents, asking that his mother should proceed to Westport, as the lad's condition was serious, and this was the first intimation that was received of his illness being of an alarming nature. Mrs Calder left by the first steamer, the 'Kennedy' which, unfortunately, had to seek shelter at Totaranui, and the poor mother reached Westport only to find that her son had died by half-an-hour before, having been suffering from blood-poisoning and inflammation of the lungs. The deceased was a member of the H Battery, and a very promising young cricketer and fotballer - in fact, a fine manly young fellow, and the sympathy that will be felt with his stricken parents will be deep, and spread over a wide circle. The Calder family formerly resided here, and this evening symathy with them is heard expressed in all directions. The deceased was a great favourite amongst his old friends here. If possible, the Anchor Company will intercept the Kennedy at Greymouth, and that steamer will call here on her way to Foxton and bring the body. The funeral which is announced for Wednesday afternoon, will be a military one
