Can anyone help me please with info relating to the ancestors of John ALLENDER and his wife Mary Anne TURNER?
They were married in Victoria, Australia in 1868 and believed to have lived in the Ballarat area.

Ian,
1888 Victorian Post Office Directory.

1904 Victorian Directory
Tailors
Allender John, 117 Sturt st Ballarat.
A Victorian Police Gazette for Sept 15th 1897 reports that a bridle was stolen from a stable at 13 Dawson St South Ballarat owned by a John Allender, tailor.
1914 Electoral Roll
Mary Ann Allender, Clayton St Ballarat East, home duties.
1919 Electoral Roll
Mary Ann Allender, Clayton St Ballarat East, home duties.
1924 Electoral Roll
Mary Ann Allender, Clayton St Ballarat East, home duties.
(Couldn't see John Allender in Ballarat for these Rolls)
There is a death registration for a Jno Allender for 1926 at Cheltenham and his age was given as 82 which made his birth around 1844. The notice indicated that his father was Jno & mother Mary Ann Turner which probably would have been an error because Mary Anne was his wife.
I assume that John probably came from England so if this is the correct Johm Allender and John is his father and he was born around 1844 we might be able to work backwards and get possible birth and/or census details for John in England.
There are 2 death registrations for a Mary Ann Allender (1928 & 1934) plus one for a Mary Allender in 1942 so its difficult to figure out the correct one.

Ian
There are some WW1 records as well for 3 of the children do you want these!
Is it possible that John had a brother Thomas in Australia?
Gerry, can you please confirm "eardington" in Leonard eardington Allender.
Thanks, Ian
YES please .... would you happen to have any photos of these good people? (asked with tongue in cheek)
I am not sure about any brother that John might have had.
Ian
Ian,
For the 1914, 19 & 24 Electoral Rolls I had Mary Ann Allender residing at Ballarat East I now think that this was possibly a Mary Ann Snell who married a Thomas Allender and resided at Ballarat East.
For a couple of the WW1 records the next of kin is as follows.
Mother, Mrs M A Allender, Yerton, 'The Ridge', Canterbury Road, Camberwell, Victoria. This puts your Mary Ann Allender in Melbourne in 1915.
1914 Electoral Roll
Mary A Allender, Hampton Rd, Hampton.
1919 Electoral Roll
Mary A Allender, Yerton, the Ridge, Canterbury.
1924 Electoral Roll
Mary A Allender, 31 Highfield Rd, Canterbury.
Still can't see John on these rolls!
A couple of the children also use the same ER addresses.
Maybe John had died before 1914 because the next of kin was the mother and I can't see John on rolls.
There is a death for a Jno Allender in 1892 at East Melbourne!
Gerry
Ian,
On his birth it is Leonard Eardington
On his marriage it is Leonard Eddington
On his WW1 enlistment papers it is leonard Earlington.
(Decorated with the MSM in WW1)
The WW1 papers can be found at http://naa12.naa.gov.au/NameSearch/Interface/NameSearchForm.aspx
Gerry
Gerry,
I have revised and updated as detailed above - thank you so much.
I have reason to believe (but not yet authenticated) that Mary Anne Turner's father was Francis Turner and her mother was Hanna (unknown) ?
Ian
Ian,
There is a death registration in Victoria 1934 #6377.
Mary Ann Allender (85)
Death place: Coburg Victoria.
F: Fran Turner
M: Unknown Hannah.
If this is your Mary Ann she would have been born around 1849.
There is an 1851 England Census record that has a Mary Ann Turner 2, mother Hannah and father Francis, this might be her family!
Address appears to be 88 Cardigan Place, Lambeth Surrey, England.
Francis J L Turner, 27, born Pruro Cornwall, Police Constable.
Hannah Turner, 27, born Soho, Middlesex, England, wife.
Emma Turner, 4, born Lambeth, Surrey, Emngland, daughter.
Mary Ann Turner, 2, born Lambeth, Surrey, England.
Jane Eliza Turner, 2mo, born lambeth Surrey, England.
These are unproven but possible, a death certificate for Mary Ann Allender might give you more family information. The Victorian certificates you can download a digital copy for a fee.
Gerry
Gerry,
It may be unproven but I am sure that you have found the right family. It is now beginning to come together nicely - thank you !!
Ian
Ian,
If the census is good then it is possible that Francis. J. L. Turner was Mary's father.
There was a death in Ballarat in 1903 for a Francis Jno Lathbury Turner 79!
Death location: Ballarat.
Francis Jno Lathbury Turner.
79
F: Fran Jno Turner
M: Mary Pascoe Oliver.
1903 #4279
The initials are good and the age about right, maybe it is Mary's father and he came out to Australia as well!
On the IGI familysearch site there is a birth on September 26th 1823 then a Chritening at St Mary, Truro, Cornwall, England for a Francis John Lathbury Turner on December 21st 1823. Father John Lathbury Turner and Mother, Mary Pasco.

Thank you Gerry - I never imagined that I could obtain so much information so soon - I am truly impressed and thank you very much !!

Hi Ian
You got my interest with the reference to John Lathbury Turner. JL Turner who marr Mary Olver (Pascoe) and lived in areas around Calcutta in the Indigo trade also had another family with a Bengali woman. One of the children from that relationship was a William Turner who also had a son called John Latbury Turner. This John married Sarah Houghton in Geelong, Victoria, Australia in 1871. It seems that one of the sons of
The references you have are to the English home of John Turner (who arrived in Bengal in 1804) from Exeter in England. John (1784 - 1832)and Mary Olver (Pascoe)had a number of children, among them Francis John Lathbury Turner who also seems to have turned up in Australia.
All a bit confusing but please contact me if you want more. i am a descendant of the Bengali side of the family and have history up until 1860 in Calcutta when William Turner and his two children (John Lathbury Turner and Anna Evans Turner (not 'Planter' as someone else has claimed)left Bengal. (Planter was a reference in the birth record to the father's occupation). I'm interested in knowing how John got to Australia as if seems his father and older sister Anna Evans Turner went to Canada. John would only have been 12 -14 in 1860.
look forward to hearing from you.
Hi Kz, I am also a descendant of the Bengali side of this family and would love some information. I come from one of Anna Evans Turner and George Hayward Fuller's children - Albenia Watkins Fuller.
Hi Rachel
Contact me at kayrollinson@yahoo.com and we can exchange information. Happy to help.

Thank you everyone (especially Gerry) for this very helpful info.
I am also researching a John Allender (my g-g grandfather)and am hitting a brick wall!
This John was married to Matilda Catherine Thomas and was likely born some time between 1845-1885; I know that he and his family (children: Melva Ruth 1906; Edith Matilda 1908; and John Martin 1910) were located in the Ballarat/Stawell region between 1905-1910.
As John Francis Sam Allender sadly died aged 1, the John Allender I am researching is not the son of Mary Ann Turner. It instead appears likely his mother was Mary Ann Snell. However while I've been able to locate a death certificate for a John Allender confirming mother as Snell and fitting the approx dates (although all other children from the same marriage before and after John are documented).
The only other option that has the potential to match is a John Earnest Allender born 1883 in Sandhurst - died 1931 (Hawthorn) parents John and Maria Davis. However have been unable to track down any evidence he was ever married.
Would be very grateful for any light that other members might be able shed on my John Allender's parentage?
Solomon Allender was a convict married at the age of 43 to Mary Ann Snell. They had 11 children. The children's births are all accredited to Thomas Allender except Henry Solomon who only lived for 1 year. Solomon may have had a brother Thomas whose name he used to disguise his convict background. Solomon and Henry are buried in the same unmarked grave. Henry is the only child who is listed as having Solomon for a father, his birth name is listed as henry Solomon his death name as Solomon Henry.
Solomon Age: 66 Death: Cause Hydatids Of Liver For 2 Years 1889 Buninyong, Victoria Ballarat New Cemetery Ch of England Section A Row 4 Grave 40 unmarked. Son Henry Allender in the same grave.
Mary Ann Allender (Snell) is buried in the Ararat cemetery and so is John Allender (1880 - 23 Mar 1950)husband of Catherine Matilda. The death index lists his parents as Thomas and Mary Ann.
John Allender married Mary Ann Turner in 1868. Mary Ann is the daughter of Francis Turner born in Bengal.
They are two quite different Mary Anns but the whole issue is convoluted and bloody hard to follow.
solomon and mary ann snell were my great grandparents.(as far as I can work out)
my grandpa was william john allender and his wife was caroline thomas.
