Capt James Fletcher

Journal by kerry4305

Looking for information on Captain James Fletcher and families. James was 3/4 Mississippi Choctaw Indian Chief. He was one of many tribal chiefs that signed the Treaty of the Dancing Rabbit Creek in 1830, which was the treaty that moved his people from Mississippi to the Indian Territory in Oklahoma. This was later to become known as ?the Trail of Tears?. My husbands ggg Grandmother was Miranda/Maranda Fletcher b.abt 1831 in Mississippi who married Collier Barksdale Gates. Her parents were John Fletcher (son of Capt James) and Sally/Sarah Merchant. Miranda and Collier died in Winn Parish LA. USA. They had 10 children including Sarah Ann Gates who married
James Thomas Kelly. I have more info to share on these families.

I am a descendent of James Thomas Kelly (J T Kelly buried in Harmony Grove, Louisiana cemetery). If this is the same James Thomas Kelly referred to here, please send me what you can on his lineage and I'll fill in what I know and return it.

Hi Becky,
I can send you a file I have created on FTM to your email. I am still trying to work out how to use this site and was hoping to upload it here. Yes this is the same James Thomas Kelly. James and Sarah had a daughter Cora Ann Buella who married John Thomas Eldridge and my husband is a descendent from this line through their daughter Pearl who married George Hughes. I am still working on the file and I would be happy to send you a copy, you could probably make some corrections.I have notes scattered all over my computer and I am still trying to put the pieces together. I have found a lot of my information on USGenweb under the state of Louisiana and Ancestery.com

Looking forward to hearing from you,
Kerry Hughes

Hi Kerry,

My father is a descendent of John Thomas Kelly, then his son John Amon Kelly, then his son James Virgil Kelly. I can send you quite a bit of information on that lineage. I know the names and most of the dates of birth of the children of John Thomas Kelly (he had about 10 siblings). Then John Amon had about 12 or so. I have all their names and again, most of their dates of birth. James Virgil was my father's father, but he committed suicide when my father was about 10 or 11, so he was raised more as a sibling than a nephew to the children of John Amon Kelly. We just had a family reunion this weekend. That's where I got your contact information, so you may hear from more of us! I would love to see what you have. Like you, I am new to this site. Are you really in Australia? As I said before, I/we are in Louisiana. Just so you know, the church "homecoming" at Harmony Grove Church where J T Kelly and other relatives are buried will be (I think) the first weekend of October (this year and every year). It will be a small gathering, but my father and I will probably go. If you have any questions about this side of the family, I can ask and see if I can get you any information. I am trying to put together something to send you. My sister has the book with most of this information, but she is going to copy it for me and have it back to me by the end of May. I'll try to get you something as soon as I can.

Talk to you soon!
Becky

Hi Becky

My web page should be in my profile if not you could try to copy and paste the folowing.

I have a couple different Kelly/Kelley lines that I am tracing, my husband's who is from the States and one of my own. If you click on the K in the list of names and then find the name Cora it should be easy to navigate through my husbands line of Kelly's. I have some more info to go into my site but it is so scattered I need to do a little more checking to sort it out.
Yes I am from Australia. My husband and I met on the internet while both only new to genealogy and after I visited him in the States we were married in Georgia and now he lives here in Australia. We are currently living outside Brisbane in Queensland. I think I wrote more details in the part on this site thar says introduce yourself. My husbands families are from Louisiana and Mississippi and his parents are currently living in Tennessee. In case you get confused (so many do) his mother's maiden name is Hughes the same as his father's surname (no relation). They were just at Crowville,Franklin Parish, Louisiana a week ago to bury my husbands Grandmother Pearl. I hope you are able to view my site and make any suggestions or corrections.

Keep in touch
Kerry

P.S
I look forward to whatever information you can pass my way. I haven't actually worked out the distant in cousins you are to my mother-in-law, although I know she would be very happy also to read what information you have.

I went to your website. It is really GREAT!! I found our side of the family. Is there a way I can add to your site or do I need to send the information to you to add? I want to be sure to send dates of birth, death and (when possible) marriage when I send it, so I'll wait. I also have copies of pictures. I'll try to get them cleaned up enough that you can post them. I have pictures of J T Kelly (blurry) and Sara Gates (fairly clear - who actually looks a lot like my aunt who is still living). I also have pictures of John Amon Kelly and Dora Walker Kelly and lots of their children, grandchildren, etc. I'll send what I can when I get them back from my sister (at the printer's).

I am glad you enjoyed my website I am always updating so check back often. As you can see I have started to go back further into Georgia, I had some leads but so far I have only confirmed the marriage of J T Kelly's parents William and Elizabeth White. Another interesting thing is Cora Kelly's husband, John Eldridge's mother was a WALKER also from Winn Parish, Louisiana there is probably a connection there also I have a little info but not much, if you go to the USgenweb and then the state of Louisiana-Winn Parish there are a lot of transcripts from the cemeteries including Harmony Grove,Kelly and Sikes and obituaries which is where I found my information along with the help of my mother-in-law and her dear mother Pearl who at 94 had a great memory. I am really excited about pictures I have written my M.I.L and I am hoping she might have something on Cora Kelly or any other Kelly Clan members.

Kerry,

I got the information from my sister this weekend. I have a few pictures I want to send, but don't see how on this site. Pictures including William and Elizabeth Kelly, James Thomas "Jim" Kelly, Sarah Ann Gates Kelly, John Amon and Dora Walker Kelly (my great grandparents), John W. Kelly, Troy Kelly, Mary Kelly Sanders (Cora's sister), then a group with Mary Kelly Sanders, Cora Kelly Eldridge, Wycliff Kelly and Jimmy Jackson Kelly. Quality is not great, but I'll do the best I can. How can I get these to you?

hi Kerry,

I was looking for info for Captain James and found your page though its not the right James there was some interesting info on your page that caught my attention. The back story to this is that my ggg uncle was Captain James, but James was his last name. from what I know of my Family history he married an Indian princess on the Trail of Tears, and it's from my fathers side of the Family that this lineage comes from the Kelley's, I have some info on this subject and thought maybe there was some correlation with the Kelley Sur name.

Hi Orion.

I have much more information since I started this post my Kelly's/Kelley's certainly go back to the Fletcher family. What is not proven by document but by family history is whether our John Fletcher was the son of Captain James Fletcher. John's daughters Miranda and Sarah married brothers named Morgan and Collier Barksdale. I have a lot of information on Sarah that suggests that she was part Indian. You can find information on the internet about Captain James Fletcher during his term as chief. Our Kelly's were from Georgia before settling in Louisiana. I don't think we are talking about the same family.

Kindest regards
Kerry.

Hello my dear family! I am Lanna Dark Duncan . I am from Columbia Louisiana. I to am actively searching for information on my Kelly , Gates , Fletcher and Sanders lineage. My grandmother was Maude Sanders Dark . Her mother was Mary Elizabeth Kelly Sanders (we called her Body) lol . I have my dad’s DNA along with mine on several sites . Meme Dark (Maude) would tell me stories about her ancestors I just wish I would have written it down . Her story matched that of a Chief as one of her grandparents.
