I'm doing research for a book at the moment about the 'CHARLES' family in South Australia so I've come across other CHARLES families in the research.
This one is yours;

Andrew CHARLES 1813-1888 and wife Margaret, nee Moorhead 1813-1867 Assisted immigrants from Tyrone, Ireland sponsored by AB Smith & Co. Arrived on 'The England' on July 17, 1841 in Port Phillip. Both could read and write and came as, farm servants for religion they entered, Protestant. Their 9 month old son Joseph b:1840 arrived with the couple.
Here are some of the children;
Joseph 1840, of course then I think there was a James 1841- 1893.
Then, Mary Jane b:1842 at Durdidwarrah, Victoria, and died 25 October 1878 at Geelong, Victoria. married Mark BIDDLE 1814-1918 on the 16 September 1862. They had 6 children:-
Rachel Biddle 1864 ? 1948 Robert Charles Biddle 1866 ? 1961
Mary Ann Biddle 1870 ? Sophie Biddle 1873 ?
Mark Andrew Biddle 1875 ? 1917 and William Biddle 1878. After Mary Ann died in 1878 Mark BIDDLE married Martha MILLIGAN 1855-1933.

Sophia b:1846 at Barrabool Hills, Victoria, and died 1899 at Burrumbeet, Victoria married Joseph DRAFFIN 1838-1914 (Joseph had come out with his family from Cavan, Ireland abt 1850s) at Burrumbeet, these are their children:-
James William DRAFFIN 1865?1908, David DRAFFIN 1867?1944,
Margaret DRAFFIN 1869, John Andrew DRAFFIN 1872?1946,
Joseph DRAFFIN 1874, Sarah Jane DRAFFIN 1876,
Robert Charles DRAFFIN 1878 and Edwin Francis DRAFFIN 1880.

Robert CHARLES b: 1847 at Durdidwarrah, Victoria died 1924 at Learmouth, Victoria m. Euphemia MCCARTNEY, from Scotland ? in 1875 they had 6 children:-
Emily CHARLES 1876?1941, William James CHARLES 1878?1960
John Edward CHARLES 1880?1958, Ada Sophia CHARLES 1882?1978,
Robert Ernest CHARLES 1882?1968 and Andrew Oswald CHARLES 1885?1975

John CHARLES b:1849, died in Ballarat. married Sarah WELLS 1854-1932 in 1878
then there was a William born in 1851 died 1935 and possibly a Margaret born about 1841/2

I could help you a bit more with the DRAFFIN decendants but that's about it.

Maybe our member 'Tonkin' could help you with some dates
He's our most knowledgable with Victorian records.

Here are some sources to look at;

Australia Death Index, 1787-1985
New South Wales, Australia, Assisted Immigrant Passenger Lists, 1828-1896
Australia Birth Index, 1788-1922
Australia Marriage Index, 1788-1950

Hello janilye! Thankyou so much for the very quick reply. The info on Andrew and Margarets' arrival is exactly what I was hoping for. I am descended from their son James (whom I know most about) so the info about his siblings is very welcome, too. The DRAFFIN family member I am after is Elizabeth, who married Robert WHITE. Their daughter, Margaret WHITE married James CHARLES in 1867. Elizabeth was possibly Joseph DRAFFIN's (1838-1914) sister? Thankyou, you have made me very happy. and thanks for the other tips, too.

Hello 'denner',

I'm sorry to disappoint you, but none of those names are familiar to me. Although that's not to say they aren't related to my family, I have just never heard of them before. My family came from the Ballarat/Lake Windermere area. I'm sorry I'm not of any help to you. Good luck on your hunt.

Juanita. :)

Hi there, I am related to this family too. Andrew Charles and Margaret Moorehead were my 3 x great grandparents. I am the granddaughter of Alice May Charles and Edward Marsham Hughes. Maybe we will be able to help one another. Kind regards, Paula

My maiden name is Charles and Dad was born in St Kilda. His dad was from Staffordshire so always looking for connections. I have a very large file on this family.

Hi Rianda,
I don't know if we are related or not. I think PaulaJayne will be the best help as I am relying on her for info, as I have precious little. I do know of some CHARLES members being in the Melbourne area. Mine were from the Ballarat area of Victoria, Australia, and my immediate family is from Geelong, Vic, Aus. It is quite possible that we are cousins and I am looking forward to finding out more.
Kindest regards, Juanita.

Hi Glenda, Your Wm and Jane may well be related to mine. I have not come across those names in my searches, but that does not necessarily mean they aren't relatives. I am sad to say that I am not currently active in my research as I am really very busy with study at the moment. i will keep visiting this site on occasion, but I just don't have the time to research anything. I am sorry to disappoint, but I am not in a position, just yet, to spend time on the family tree hunt.

I wish you good luck in your searching and if/when I can get time, I will be back and try to help.

Sorry,
Juanita :)
