Mr. H. J. BURGEF
Mr. Henry John Burge, who died at Lyndoch recently, was born at Hilcot, near Pewsey, in the County of Wiltshire, England, on August 5, 1845. At the age of 10 years he and his parents, with other members of the family, came out to Australia in the sailing ship 'Lovestyne.' The journey occupied nearly five months, and after landing at Port Adelaide, the family journeyed to Adelaide by coach. After staying the night with friends in Hindley street, another coach journey brought them to Gawler, where
they spent the night at the "Old Spot Hotel." Next morning they walked to Sandy Creek, and renewed acquaintances with the Lawes family. The Burge family settled in Lyndoch, living first of all at Sandy Common.
When Holy Trinity Church, Lyndoch, was built in 1860, Mr. Henry Burge assisted his father in carting some of the stone and other building materials, and was present when the church was opened in 1861. As a young man, Mr.Henry Burge worked for the late Mr. Joseph Barritt, assisted chiefly in the overlanding of cattle from Mr. Barritt's property on the River Darling.
For a number of years Mr. Burge and his brother Meshech rented from Mr.Barritt the property now owned by Mr. H. Kennedy. For twelve years or so.
Mr. Burge lived in Adelaide and Alberton, being employed by the big contractors of those days, Messrs. Brown and Thompson, and English and Brown. Be was one of the guarantors of the Angaston railway. In 1864 Mr. Burge married Miss Elizabeth Filsell
at Trinity -Church, Adelaide. There were two sons, William and, Charles, and one daughter, Linda, now Mrs. H. Slade. Mrs. Burge died about the year 1877, and was buried in the Cheltenham cemetery. About 14 years later Mr.Burge married Miss Sarah Jane Green, of Gawler. Mr. Burge was taken suddenly ill, was removed to the Hutchison Hospital, Gawler, and died in his sleep. The remains were interred in the Holy Trinity cemetery,Lyndoch.

MR.C.J.BURGE
DEAD
Union Secretary
For 30 Years
While breaking his journey to Mel-
bourne at Ballarat, the secretary of the
South Australian branch of the Tim-
ber Workers' Union (Mr. Charles J.
Burge) died suddenly at his hotel early
today.
With the president of the Theatrical
Employes' Union (Mr. H. S. Duke), he
was on his way to Melbourne to attend
a union conference. Mr. Burge who
was aged about 66, had been secretary
of the branch for about 30 years and
had been an active worker in many
phases of the industrial movement. He
was also Federal vice-president of the
Timber Workers' Union.
Mr. Burge had taken part in many
court cases, mostly in Melbourne on
behalf of his union, and was respon-
sible in securing a 44-hour week for its
members.
The secretary of the State branch of
the Australian Labor Party (Mr. F. F.
Ward) said today his loss would be
deeply felt at the Trades Hall. He had
always taken a keen interest in his
work, and was an enthusiastic and cap-
able worker in the industrial cause.
The secretary of the Government
Workers' Association (Mr. F. K. Nieass.
M.P.) said he had occupied the office
opposite Mr. Burge at the Trades Hall
for 24 years, and had found him a sin-
cere worker in his advocacy of indus-
trial advancement. He was most con-
scientious in his service to members.
and had done much to advance their
interests.

Once again, thankyou. I never met my grandfather Charles as I was born in 1947. I only have my mother's recollections, so it is nice to hear about my grandfather from a different viewpoint. His son, Walter Burge, later became the Secretary of the Timberworkers Union, following in his father's footsteps. Fortunately, he lived a long life, also becoming a Grand Master of the Independent Order of Oddfellows. He was my favourite uncle on this side of our family.

*John Burge could possibly have been a Police Constable in S.A. I will have a look.
*Meshach may be the person below in the article (there is a photo of him in the article)
A Pioneer Farmer
AN old resident of the Lyndoch district, who hopes to attend the Back-to-Lyndoch celebrations this month, is Mr. M. Burge, who is now living in retirement at Walkerville terrace, Walkerville.
He is 92, but as strong and active as many men 20 years his Junior. Open-air life helped to give him a strong constitution, for he spent the greater part of his life
farming. Born in 1843, Mr. Burge still possesses his birth certificate, issued at
Somerset House, London, and the record of his baptism at North Newton Church, Wiltshire.
He was 11 when he came to South Australia, and is proud of his recollections of life in the early days of the State.
His two sons? Mr. M. W. Burge, of Farrell's Flat, and Mr. Percy Burge, of Lyndoch? are both on the land, the latter having 70 acres of vines. Mr. Burge, sen., occasionally visits his sons' properties, and revives memories of his own experiences.
