Coon/Kuhn of Ohio
Hello fellow genealogist!
This is my first journal post and I figured that I would start a series based on the Coon/Kuhn branch of my family tree. To start, it would seem my family has been in Ohio for some time. Names that pop up include McNamer, Crabtree, Sprigg, and McCain (to name a few). Let's begin, shall we?
My name is HollyAnne Prater (b. 1990) and my parents are JoEllen Kuhn (b. 1969) and Kenneth Prater (b. 1965). Mom and I were born in Marion, Ohio. Her parents, my grandparents, are Bernard Carvin "Joe" Coon/Kuhn (b. 23 Apr 1931, d. 19 June 2008) and Margaret Jean Grigg (b. 1935). From here, I am focusing on my grandpa's family.
In Bernard had five sisters who lived into adulthood and one who was stillborn. The five who survived were Melba (b. 1924, d. 1992), Kathleen (b. 1927, d. 1974), Nellie (b. 1928, d. 1974), Faye (b. 1933, d. 2006), and Janet (b. 1934, d. 2009). Their parents were Noah Ellsworth Coon/Kuhn (b. 1 Nov 1901, d. 9 Oct 1993) and Hazel Leona Clark (b. 3 July 1905, d. 2 Nov 1970). Grandpa, his sisters, and their dad were all born in Oak Hill, Jackson county, Ohio. Hazel, meanwhile, was born in Ironton, Ohio. In another post, I will outline Hazel's portion of the tree.
Noah's parents were George Lewis Coon (b. 1 Dec 1861, d. 24 Oct 1945) and Rachel McNamer (b. 23 Dec, 1860, d. 5 Aug 1936). Both were born in Jackson county, Ohio. Side note on George and Rachel: My grandpa, Bernard, said his grandmother was rather mean. She was drinker, having died from cirrhosis of the liver, and would often beat the grandchildren. George, my grandpa told everyone, was a lovely old man. He spoke German, had horses that nobody messed with or George would become angry enough to beat you up, and loved his grandchildren. My grandpa kept a photo of George at his bedside for as long as I could remember.
George and Rachel had five sons: Noah, Albert (b. Feb 1898), Harmon (b. Nov 1891), Daniel William (b. 18 Dec 1884, d. 20 Apr 1964), and Bird (b. 9 June 1883, d. 3 March 1935). Bird and Daniel were born in Scioto county, Ohio. Albert and Harmon, it is assumed, were born in Jackson county, Ohio.
Rachel's parents were Abraham "Abram" McNamer/McNamara (1833 - 1914) and Artimacy Crabtree (1837 - 1905) These two were back and forth between Scioto county and Jackson county. I am stuck following this generation. If anyone reading this can help me with the next generation/s, that would be amazing.
Next Post I will fill this portion of the tree in with stories that I know.
