Daniel Black Mcleely
I m looking for my Great Granfather,Daniel Black Mcleely.
He had a son named Hector Black Mcleely....
My great granfather remarried a maori princess by the last name of Kingi who i think was from Tokomaru bay or he was from there...
I would love to give my kids a Family tree on the Mcleely side, also to share with my father,(Peter David Mcleely) who has never known anything about the Mcleely side...
My Granfather had change his name from a Mcleely to a McCleely, when he left home and never saw my Great granfather Daniel Black McCleely.
I guess my Granfather Hector had his reason, but i tell you what he was the best Granfather to ever have around. I wish my kids could of meet him..

Hello Caitlin, Have you had any luck with tracking down some relitives of Dan McLeely. My mothers maiden name was McLeely, her mother was a Kingi and Married Dan Mcleely.
My mother, Hine McLeely married Charlie (Henare) Pokai, my name is Henry Pokai, grandson of Daniel McLeely.
Hello,
My mother's mother (my grandmother) was Myrtle Irene McLeely who married Daniel Black McLeely in 1920 at Tokomaru Bay. She was born in 1900 and her birthplace was in Mangonui. Her mother was Rhoda Wilson nee Walls and her father was Charles Wilson (a carpenter). Myrtle had a son Hector Black McLeely born between Jan-Mar 1920. Her defacto husband was Harold James Glassford from Gisborne and they had 10 children (of which my mother was one). Myrtle died in childbirth having her last son who was adopted out. All the other children were put into orphanages, except my mother who was handed over to her grandmother (Harold James 'Jock''s mother) as she was apparently unwell at the time. Myrtle died on 6 March 1932 and was registered as Myrtle Irene McLeely-Glassford when she died. The names & birthdates are as follows: 1921 - Mervyn Harold Glassford, 1922 - Dorothy (alive) & Joan Glassford (deceased) (twins), 1924 - Mavis Gloria Glassford (deceased), 1925 - Gloria Patricia Glassford (deceased), 1926 - Thelma Glassford (my mother), 1928 - Jean Melba Glassford (deceased), 1929 - Rita Esma Glassford (deceased), 1930 - Margret Glassford (deceased), 1932 - Bruce (first name & surname may have changed). My mother is now 87.
The information I have provided above I only discovered last month when my mother was moving into a retirement village after my father passed away nearly two years ago. My mother unfortunately didn't know her mother (Myrtle) as she was only five years old when she passed away during childbirth in 1932. My mother hardly knew her father either as he put all her brothers and sisters into "homes" and went on to marry again to a Rosina Batchelor (& possibly more children?). My mother was initially brought up with her grandparents until they died when a strict spinster aunt became her guardian. My Mum is an active lady with limited eyesight and has only recently known Mervyn, Doris (Dorothy) & Joan (until Joan passed away) in the last few years. Mum didn't know Hector who would be her half-brother. I would love to know any information you have. He would be 93 if he was still alive. Thank you.
Hi niccijp. I am in the process of putting together my family tree and came upon your post during a google search. It is of HUGE interest to me as Mavis Glassford would have been my Grandmother. I am interested if you don't mind sharing, to know how you know that Mavis died? I was trying to track down her death certificate through BDM but unfortunately they were unable to locate her in their system. This made me wonder whether she remarried and died under that name? I have tried googling her name through pretty much all the NZ cemetery databases but came up empty. I would love to know any further information about the Glassfords, specifically any documentation relating to her would be fantastic. Thanks, Sonya

Actually, Myrtle Irene McLeely (nee Wilson) died on 05 March 1932 in Gisborne. She was buried on 06 March 1932 at Taruheru Cemetery - registered as Myrtle Irene McLeely-Glassford. Can anyone give me more information regarding Hector Black McLeely (McCleely), please? When did he die and how old was he etc? I wish my mum and I could have met him too. By the way, my mum is lovely as well. Peter David McLeely would be my cousin ( of which there are many that I don't know from my mum's brothers & sisters side).
Hector Black McLeely (McCleely) would have been Mum's half-brother but unfortunately, didn't know this until recently.
Peter David McLeely would be my half-cousin (if you can have a half-cousin!) Cheers.
Sorry I posted incorrect information - not Peter David McLeely.
Hi. My name is Mary Paparina Black - Burgoyne
I am the daughter of Mary McLeely who is the eldest daughter born to Daniel Black McLeely and Wari Ngutu Paora Kingi. My grandparents had 8 children: Mary, Margaret, Hera, Daniel, Hine, Charles, Paparina (Biddy) and Julia. My mother passed away in 2011 at the age of 87. Still living is Biddy, Charles and Julia who reside in Taneatua and Whakatane. The whanau would be only to happy to assist you with your queries. Our cousin Tina has researched the McLeely family thoroughly so I'm sure it would be nice to make a connection.
Hello niccijp,
I just found this site while searching for information on my father's mother. The birth certificate I have lead me to believe that Myrtle Irene McCleely Glassford is his mother. My fathers name is Bruce and his birthdate is 5/3/1932. He was adopted at birth but not legally. Dad only found this out while applying for a passport in the 1980's. The birth certificate I have shows that he is Bruce McCleely (adopted name - left out for now) place of birth 444 Palmerston Road, Gisborne. Mothers maiden name Wilson of Mangonui. Father not recorded. My name is Allan aged 63 eldest of 4 children.
Kia Ora Paparina,
I would love to know more about the McLeely clan. I am the grandson of Bully and TeAo, son of Hinehou whangai of Rita Biddle. Brother to Sam, Tania, Charlie, Lovey and Peta. Mum (Rita) and I lived with nan and koro for a while in Tane. Now that mum and my sister bub (Tatai) have passed, I feel its my time to learn more about my whakapapa. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Say hi to nanny Biddy. I saw her last at Bubs tangi. Thank you for your post. Larry.
Hi I am a granddaughter of Myrtle Irene Mcleely Glassford. I am researching the Mcleely/McCleely/McLeely connection to the family. Can anyone please give me the Marriage Index number for Daniel Black Mcleely & Waru Ngutu Paora Kingi as I can’t find it? The problem seems to be with the spelling of Mcleely. Thanks, Robyn
robync, you also won't find it at BDM if they married after Aug 1938. However, Myrtle died in 1932
