Baker and pastry cook.
At age 24 he enlisted in the infantry on 8th November 1916 at Liverpool NSW and was discharged 17th March 1919 at Victoria barracks Sydney as unfit to continue following his bronchial condition resulting from "Trench Fever" and his smoking habit. He was wounded in the left leg whilst fighting in France.
N 6819 AIF 6th Light Horse.
After the war he worked in Grafton and was a friend of Digby NOTT who was married to Leda Notley, sister of Elma Notley. Charles and Digby were both returned servicemen and met at the RSL in Grafton. Charles became friendly with Elma and she became pregnant.
In 1922 the year Elma gave birth to her daughter Betty, Charles had gone back to Cootamundra and married Hilda Parker. It is not known if Charles was aware of the pregnancy.
He lived in Queens Avenue Parramatta for a number of years and he died in the Curie Nursing Home Parramatta NSW.


Notes for ELMA CLAIRE NOTLEY:

Elma was pregnant with Betty at age 17-18 years, and her mother was deceased at this time. Her father placed advertisements in the Grafton paper seeking a foster family for the baby.
They made Elma give up her child and had her placed in foster care at age 4 months with the Williams family of Coffs Harbour.
Foster parents were Robert Williams and Ina Williams nee Bonwick.
It is not known why Charles Gravolin left town, but is thought that Elma's father would not let his daughter marry a Catholic and as he held high office in the Masonic Lodge he did not wish for any scandal to become known in the local area. Then again Charles may not have known about the pregnancy when he moved to Cootamundra.
Elma found that after she married "Frank" Jones that they could not have children so she asked her father (along with the support of her brother Osric and sister Leda) to have Betty returned to her, but her father told her that Betty had died.
