Does anyone know where the Liddle's originated from?

Question by Hetaliangirl651

The relatives that I am aware of now are from Indiana, but I know there is evidence that we are not originally from there. My father says we might have immigrated from Ireland, but I am not sure. Could someone help me?

Lower says -and you have to be careful as he got things wrong- that there was a family of Liddell, Merchants of Newcastle upon Tyne UK who took thier name from a river in Scotland. The Liddel Roxburghshire. My Gazetteer has Liddel Water which rises in Dead Water Bog,Roxburghshire and there is Liddel Castle nearby and a Liddell Strenth, a fortified tower Two of the Liddells had peerages. It is a common element in British River names.

From a quick look I think old Lower got it about right.
