Does anyone have information regarding Josiah Fletcher's parents, John Fletcher and Mary (knee Hilton) Fletcher... Manchester UK

Query by edf

Josiah Fletcher. b. 20-Oct 1816 in Hulme, d. 21-Jan 1845 by drowning at Merrie Creek in Victoria, Josiah married Ann Bird on the 9 Oct-1836 and they migrated to the Port Phillip Bay settlement in 1842 onboard the Sallsette.
Less than 12 months after Josiah's sudden death in 1845, Ann Fletcher married George Hall a former convict in December 1845

Josiah's parents are thought to be: John Fletcher (school master) who married Mary Hilton on the 25-Oct 1804, does anyone have any information regarding John Fletcher and Mary Hilton, birth dates, date of deaths and any other children they may have had, also any information on the final days and resting place of Ann (Bird) Fletcher, Hall

steve74, thanks for posting the transcript of the ownership dispute over the house that Josiah built, I hadn't read it in its entirety however had read the published newspaper report

Edmund left Victoria after the trial and moved to Mullaway station on the Murray river as a stockman where he met his wife Margaret O'Brien who was a house maid at the station
They married in Albury in 1861 and moved to Jerilderie then to Urana NSW Edmund d. 1899 and Margaret d. 1916.....edf

lynda1 you are correct Edmund and Margaret did have 9 children,5 girls and 4 boys, George b.1874 d. 1875 and is buried with his father in Jerilderie

Most of the children were born in Jerilderie NSW and moved to Urana NSW. some of the girls moved interstate after they married and Edmund b. 1870 moved to Fremantle

Most of the girls lived happily to old age and the boys all died fairly young, some unfortunately tragically ...hope that assists you

Lynda, I am not certain but the dates all fit married 1804 if you look at the original handwritten immigration manifest for the Barque Salsette for Josiah and Anne Fletcher, Josiah's age was given as 34 years, Josiah & Mary (Hilton) had a son Josiah born in 1807, Salsette sailed in 1841 which does make Josiah's age 34 years it all fits.
However if you look at other sailing documents for the Salsette, it gives Josiah's age at 24 years born in 1816, possible son of schoolmaster John and mother Mary and his death certificate issued in 1845, states his age as 29 years at date of death. b. 1816 d. 1845...29 years of age, we seem to have two Josiah's hope you can shed a bit more light on the subject....edf

Edf Have to wait for week to look up shipping records.I think "Josiah" and Mary
had a son who died. Then had another son named Josiah who m Ann Bird.

Hi Lynda, Josiah (son) born in 1809 to (father) Josiah and Mary (Foden) Fletcher, lived for three months and died the same year died, Josiah and Mary had another son also named Josiah born in 1811, he also died in 1811 after living for only 5 months and his (father) Josiah died in the same year,1811, sadly leaving Mary (Foden) Fletcher a widow with only one living child Martha (Foden) Fletcher who was born in 1806......and went onto to marry John Ralphs in 1832, Josiah and Mary (Foden) Fletcher are not our G.G.G. Grandfathers parents and it confused me for over 12 months until I had a colleague in Manchester research it for me

However your latest research on Thomas Fletcher and Mary (Foden) Fletcher who had a son Josiah who married Anne Bird is very promising, it must be a different Mary (Foden) Fletcher, can you please forward more details as this may be our G.G.G.G. Grandparents ....good work Edf

by edf on 2014-01-10 21:20:05

Hi Lynda, I see from your previous research that you may have found out what happened to Ann (Bird) Fletcher, Hall, if so could you update me on where she is buried, date of death and did she re-marry after George Hall....many thanks, edf

by lynda1 on 2014-01-11 04:43:58

Edf, Looked through my records for Ann next to death is 1873 .and nothing else.
Don't know anything else.No notes attached -no Reg no. I haven't found anything
about her. Lynda1

Hi Lynda1, the Ann (nee Stevens) Hall who died in 1873 at Green Gully in Vic. is buried alongside a young man whose name was Ibbotson, she isn't our G.G. Grandmother.
I think Ann (nee Bird, Fletcher) Hall may be buried at the old St James church in Docklands Vic, where Josiah is buried and the same church where she married George Hall...needs some research to prove....however I don't know if she remarried or not
as Ann is proving a mystery...edf

by edf on 2014-01-16 07:58:56

lynda1, Liela Mary Fletcher b. in 1918 in Boulder married John Edmund Edmonds in Kalgoolie in 1940, Liela died in Crewe England on the 26 July-2001 and it was she that did most of the early Fletcher family research many years ago. Liela and John Edmonds had 4 children, Barry, Marion, John & Trevor and to my knowledge they all live in WA. Liela's parents were Josiah George Fletcher and Beatrice Jane Grylls married on the 24-08-1907 at St George cathedral Perth. The Edmonds family originally came from South Petherton Somerset UK and arrived at Port Phillip Bay in 1851......trust this helps edf

by lynda1 on 2014-01-25 23:44:54

Edf Sorry but my research doesn't go that far.Who was Josiah George Fletcher's
parents?Was it John Clifton or Edmund's? Lynda1

by lynda1 on 2014-01-27 04:24:58

Edf Found inform about Josiah and Beatrice. When George Hall m Ann,she used Fletcher as her surname. Also do you have,?I have a book with names from Narrandera.
Living 1949 1970 at school. Barbara, Christopher, David, Frances,Jacki,Lenore,Marilyn Mark, Sue, If any names there ,will write
more. Lynda1

by edf on 2014-01-28 04:10:14

lynda1, Josiah Georges parents were George Fletcher and Emily Tonkin, I think that Josiah George and James Edmund who both lived and died in the WA goldfields must have gone to Western Australia with Edmund, the son of Edmund Fletcher buried in Jerilderie NSW
The Fletcher's in Narrandera to my knowledge are not related to us and there is also another family of Fletchers who currently live in Colamberlie NSW, they are also not related.
I found a John and Anne Fletcher buried in the cemetery at Urana NSW, they are also not related to us.....that is interesting that Ann used Fletcher as her surname after marrying George Hall...I looked at Ibottson and Cawthorne as per your mail and found that and Ibbotson and Cawthorne served together in the Tasmanian Light Horse during the Boer war 1899 to 1902

by lynda1 on 2014-01-28 05:18:07

Edf Ann used "Fletcher" for her surname when she married George hall. Good to know about John+Ann l have them in the " Don't know if that fits".tree

by tonkin on 2014-01-28 05:50:54

Lynda1.

When Ann married George HALL in 1846 she was recorded by her previous married
name of FLETCHER.

When George and Ann's daughter Carol was baptised in 1848 Ann was recorded
by her correct maiden name of BIRD.

by edf on 2014-01-28 07:41:43

Tonkin , lynda1 that is interesting, why would Ann go by her maiden name ?
The grave stone at Urana simply states JOHN FLETCHER beloved husband of ANN FLETCHER who died at Coonambell on the 11 Oct 1881 age 60 years, the words were very weathered when I took a photo, also buried some distance away in the same cemetery is Margaret Fletcher my G.G Grandmother, the wife of Edmund who died in 1899, buried in the same grave is John Josiah Fletcher who drowned and George Fletcher who died after been thrown from his horse

Lynda1, I will contact the local historians in both Jerilderie and Urana to see if Ann- Bird- Fletcher- Hall or "Cawthorne" lived or is buried in either of those towns between 1850 - 1870 and see what turns up, she may have gone to live with her daughter in law, Margaret after George Hall died....edf

brian66, thanks for your family info and great to hear from a Fletcher family relative,
As you may know your G.Grandfather George. b 1839 in Manchester England, m. Emily Jane Tonkin in 1866 and d. Matlock in 1887 was my G. Grandfather, Edmund Fletcher b.1837 in Hulme England, younger brother. and both boys sailed from England on the Salsette with their parents, our common G.G grandparents, Josiah Fletcher and Anne (Bird) Fletcher, arriving at Port Phillip Bay in 1841...as Free Settlers
Your grandfather John William Fletcher b 1886 in Matlock married your Grandmother Jessie Lawson in 1914 and d. 1974 in Moe at 88 years of age,(fairly old for a Fletcher)
Three of John William's brothers and sisters are buried here in the West, Selina in Coolgardie WA, James Edmund in Kalgoorlie. WA and Josiah George in Norseman. WA.....edf

by brian66 on 2015-08-21 11:12:53

Edf
Thank for the information
Some of this i had been able to seek out through the web.
My grandfather maurice james (son of john william ) was 94 when he died.
So with luck we fletchers should live to a good age..
My grandfather did not have any information on the family so for me it is all very interesting.
On day i will have to drive out and have a look around the kal /coolgardie norsman area.
Having been through there so many times without knowing we had a distant tie to the area.. brian

by edf on 2015-09-05 00:42:37

brian66, some early research for your files, Josiah Fletcher born 1816 and Ann Bird were our G.G. Grandparents and my research ex UK, now confirms that Mary (Foden)Fletcher born in Ireland is indeed our G.G.G. Grandmother however her first husband Josiah Fletcher born 1777, died of fever in 1811 so it is currently not known who our G.G.G. Grandfather actually was, however he must have been a Fletcher possibly a relative of Josiah's, or Mary has named her son our G.G. Grandfather, born in 1816 and died by accidental drowning in 1845, Josiah Fletcher..
Josiah had a sister Martha Fletcher born in 1806 who married John Ralphs
After Martha was born, Josiah Fletcher and our G.G.G Grandmother, Mary (Foden) Fletcher had three sons from 1807 -1811 all three were named Josiah and all sadly died in infancy....edf

A little bit about Sarah Jane Fletcher (my great grandmother):

Mrs. S. J. Hatcher
Urana lost, on 11th July, one of its
oldest inhabitants in the person of
Mrs. Sarah Jane Hatcher, aged 79
years.
For a considerable time her health
had been far from satisfactory and,
on that account, her demise was not
unexpected. Her husband predeceased
her many years ago.
In the years when her health was
robust and her energies unimpaired,
Mrs. Hatcher was much loved by her
numerous acquaintances in the
Urana district. For some time she
was cared for by her daughter, Mrs.
W. Tamlyn with whom she resided
at the time of her death.
Four daughters and two sons survive her.
Mrs. Hatcher was a sister of Mrs.
F. S. J. Smith, of Narandera.

Source: Narandera Argus and Riverina Advertiser (NSW : 1893 - 1953), Tuesday 21 July 1942, page 2.

by garrytamlyn on 2015-11-05 00:47:36

BTW Sarah Jane Fletcher married George (or maybe Henry?) Hatcher.

A little bit about Edmond Fletcher (born 1837):

On Tuesday afternoon last quite a shock
was created here when news was brought in
from Wooilpark, Wilson, that Mr. Edmund
Fletcher, an old identity of the district, had
died suddenly at his camp on the Yanko
Creek that morning at about half-past ten.
The messenger who had brought in the in-
telligence to the Coroner and the police also
brought in a wire from Mr. Win. Comans, of
Woodpark, to send to his family at Urana,
informing them of the sad event. Shortly
after the news was received here Constable
Doran went out to the camp and remained
with tho body till the arrival of the Coroner
and the Doctor. After taking some of the
evidence out at the camp, the inquiry was
adjourned till next day, and the body was
brought into Jerilderie. The funeral took
place on Thursday. As the deceased resided
many years in Jerilderie before removing to
Urana, he and his family were well known
here. He was highly respectcd by all who
knew him, and deep sympathy is expressed
with the bereaved relatives. He leaves a
large family — three sons and five daughters.
He was in his 63rd year at the time of his
death.

Hi Garrytamlyn, thanks for that info on Sarah Jane b.1863...d.1942, we both share a common G.Grandfather Edmund and G.Grandmother Margaret Fletcher, as you know Edmund died 1899 of a heart attack while building a bridge over Yanko creek in Jerriderie where he is buried alongside young George 18 mths and Margaret died 1916 after the death of their sons, Goerge and John in Urana, where she is buried alongside both the boys. Edmund was the only surviving son, he moved over to WA and became a successful horse trainer and died in 1943...keep in touch. edf

Hi My G Grandmother was Sarah Anne Fletcher, her parents were Josiah Fletcher and Ann Bird, Sarah Anne was born 9th June 1845 Newtown Melbourne, she married Thomas Beveridge 1877 Melbourne. My Grandmother Adda Jane Beveridge was born 1880 Jerilderie.

by edf on 2016-07-16 20:18:36

Hi redhill36 we are direct reatives of Josiah & Anne with G.G.G Grandparents been Edmund and Margaret Fletcher, do you know where Anne (knee Bird) Fletcher / Hall is buried as I believe she lived with Sarah Anne and Thomas in later life and what year she passed away...? please keep in touch edf

by redhill36 on 2016-07-22 23:50:56

Hi edf, All I know is that Thomas Beveridge owned the Royal Mail Hotel in Jerilderie, sold it in 1875 and lived privately in Jerilderie for a few years, he then bought a property at Argoon - "Pine Grove" which is north of Jerilderie, this is where my Grandmother Adda was born, from there they moved to Ashford where Thomas bought a property called "Arthurs Seat". As you know Sarah's brother Edmund Fletcher owned the Woolshed Inn Jerilderie around the same time, so maybe Thomas Beveridge and Edmund Fletcher were friends and this is how Thomas Beveridge meet Sarah Ann Fletcher (my GGrandmother). Sarah Ann Fletcher was 32 when she married Thomas Beveridge (his 2nd marriage) so I would say she was looking after her mother in Melbourne, thus why she married late. Caroline Ann Hall married 1865 so she had left home, leaving Sarah to look after her mother Ann Bird/Fletcher/Hall.
My GG Grandmother Sarah Ann Fletcher and Edmund Fletcher ( who married Margaret O'Brien) were brother and sister.

by redhill36 on 2016-07-23 01:04:15

Hi edf, Edmund and Margaret Fletcher's daughter was Sarah Jane Fletcher who married Henry Hatcher. My Sarah Ann Fletcher was Edmund Fletcher born 1837 Hulme Manchaster sister.

by edf on 2016-07-24 00:40:31

Hi Redhill36 thanks for the information on Thomas Beveridge and Sarah Anne, yes I know Edmund b. 1837 in Manchester and Sarah Anne .b. 1845 in Newtown were brother and sister, Sarah Anne was born after Josiah drowned at Merrie Creek in 1845
However I didn't know that Thomas was the owner of the Royal Mail hotel in Jerilderie but knew Edmund was the publican of the Bunyip Hotel located 4.kms out of Jerilderie on the Deniliquin road (also called the Woolshed Hotel)

From previous research Thomas and Sarah Anne may have met in Urana and Sarah Anne lived with Edmund and Margaret at 22 Princess St. in Urana

Some years back you sent me a photo of Sarah Anne, b.9/6/1845 d. 16/7/1936 she was a very old lady in the photo and sitting in her back yard, not sure of the location

Do you have any information on the final resting place of Anne (Knee Bird. Fletcher..Hall) I was unofficially told that she is buried at Docklands near where Josiah is buried ??

by redhill36 on 2016-07-24 02:34:22

Hi edf, Like you can't find any information on Ann after George Hall died. I have Sarah Ann and Thomas Beveridge first child Edmund born in Collingwood, Dec 1877, even though they were living in Jerilderie, maybe Sarah Ann wanted to be with her mother during the birth of her first child. I know that George Hall and Ann lived in Collingwood. Do you know if Ann owned the house in Collingwood.

by edf on 2016-07-24 22:40:47

Hi Redhill36, George and Ann lived in Bourke street, George was a carpenter and Ann was a Laundress, not sure what happened to the estate after Georges death.

Josiah left his house and estate, I think there was two houses to Edmund, but one property was disputed by ownership and lost after a court case, Josiah's sister Martha Foden Fletcher's, husband John Ralphs testified at the hearing on behalf of Edmund
Thomas Cawthorne and Caroline lived in East Brunswick at the time of his death in 1891 age 52 years and Caroline died in East Melbourne hospital in 1894 aged 47 years..they had eleven children

by redhill36 on 2016-08-10 19:40:16

Hi edf, The John Edmund Edmonds who married Leila Mary Fletcher could also be related to me, as my GGGrandfather William Edmonds from South Petherton had a brother Joseph Edmonds who went to Melbourne in 1851 on board the "Stebonhealth" with his family.

by redhill36 on 2016-08-11 22:43:38

Hi edf, I have where Martha Fletcher / Ralphs was Bapt. 27th July 1806 Daresbury Chester, and died 1877, lived 1 Bell St Oxford Road Manchester, buried 7th Nov 1877 St. John Church Deansgate Lancashire age 71 years. Martha never re-married after John Ralphs died in Melbourne.
Josiah Fletcher and Mary Foden Marrid 22nd June 1804 St Peters Liverpool Lancashire.
John Fletcher Bapt. 21st April 1805 Sandbach Chester/Buried 21st June 1805 Daresbury Chester.
Martha Fletcher Bapt 27th July 1806 Daresbury Chester.
The other Fletcher children you have being born and died in Lancashire. As you, I am trying to find out where our Josiah Fletcher fits in.

by edf on 2016-08-12 02:46:18

Hi Redhill36, Thanks for that info re John and Martha, I have tried even using research people in Manchester to determine who Josiahs father was, after Josiah died of fever in Manchester it is hard to track whether Mary Foden Fletcher remarried or our Josiah Fletcher was born out of wedlock or not, my father told me there is a German ancestory in the Fletcher family tree...did Mary meet or marry a German person after Josiah died ?

Hi Redhill36, I have started researching again in my spare time some information originally given to me by edmondsallan in 2013 and again by lynda1 in 2014 and after some further digging now believe that Josiah Fletcher and Mary Foden were not our G.G. Grandfathers parents and our Josiah was born on the 20 Oct 1816 at Manchester Cathedral and his parents were indeed John Fletcher (school master)and Mary Hilton who were married on the 25 Oct 1804
I know that Josiah had contact with Martha Ralphs who I originally thought was his sister, so I am still unsure where Martha fits in..possibly a cousin as she was a witness at Josiah and Ann Birds wedding in 1836
Do you have any information re John Fletcher and Mary Hilton thanks edf

by edf on 2021-05-02 05:01:26

Hi Tonkin, I have been looking for the last known where about's of Ann (knee Bird) Fletcher b. Ireland in 1819 married Josiah Fletcher who was later drowned at Merrie Creek in 1845, Ann remarried George Hall in 1846 and was widowed again in 1850 after which she completely disappeared from all records. At the time of George Halls death in 1850, Ann was only 31 years of age with young children....did Ann re-marry ? or did she return to family in Manchester or go back to family in Ireland ? we know some time later that Ann fell out with her son Edmund over Josiah's estate of two houses and that she still had her young daughter Caroline Hall with her at the time, Caroline went onto marry Thomas Cawthorne after that Anne vanished ? Any thoughts ?

by edf on 2021-05-17 02:46:00

Hi Lynda1 I have started researching our family tree again, have you have any luck researching Ann (knee Bird) Fletcher / Hall's whereabouts after George Halls death in 1845, did Ann remarry for a third time as I recently saw a post, which indicated our G.G Grandmother was married for a third time but unfortunately it had no factual info or names to back up the claim.. so I have hit another brick wall on this one...any info would be great

by edf on 2021-12-25 00:05:47

Hello all.. I can now confirm with 100% certainty that Josiah Fletcher's parents were John Fletcher (school Master) who married Mary Hilton on the 25th Oct-1804 and they had a son Josiah Fletcher born on the 20th Oct-1816 who married Ann Bird at Manchester Cathedral on the 9th Oct 1836 and migrated to the Port Philip Bay settlement in 1842 on the Sallsette with their two sons Edmund and George. Josiah drowned at Merry Creek on the 21 Jan-1845 and as far as I can confirm is that Martha Fletcher who married John Ralph's was Josiah's cousin, not sister and Martha was a witness at Josiah and Ann's wedding in 1836 and John Ralph's was a witness at a court case for Edmund Fletcher over his father, Josiah's estate against his mother Ann Fletcher.

by redhill36 on 2022-11-12 23:51:38

Hi edf,
You say that Josiah's father is John Fletcher School Master, so one would think that Josiah would be educated, but he signed his wedding certificate with a X.
I am pretty sure that Ann 3rd marriage was to John Stephen Shelds, on 29th July 1852, as there was a Civil Case in 1875 Thomas Cawthorne and Caroline Ann Cawthorne V John Stephen Shelds, I am waiting foe information on this case.

by redhill36 on 2022-12-16 01:48:45

Hi All,
The Civil Case between Cawthorne v Shelds, was over a house block belonging to Ann Shelds nee Hall nee Fletcher. I am still looking for Ann 's death and what happened to John Stephen Shelds.

by edf on 2023-06-06 05:00:05

Hi redhill36 sorry we have been so long in responding, but did you find anything further in regard to Ann (knee Bird) Fletcher / Hall / Shield's death and where abouts of her final resting place or where Stephen Shields & decedents finished up edf
