Kawhia in 1965 was a very small out of the way Town, some where on the West Coast of the North Island of N.Z.
Population around 400 family's the greater number being decedents of the Tainui Waka, that now sleeps at Maketu Marea.
The Methodist Church located on the hill midway between the town and the Pa, was looked after by a very kind friend of my mother and farther, by the name of Barny Downs. He used to drive all over the district to pick up us kids for Sunday school, on his tiny blue Bradford Van. I often wondered about our Maori Minister and what happened to him when he left Kawhia?.
To a small boy I thought he was just the Bee knees.
