Very helpful information from Tonkin - much appreciated!

I am trying to find out if Robert Gemmell was originally from Scotland - he is on the Scottish census for 1861 but we think he left for Australia in 1862 and as far as I am aware he did not come back to the UK. A family letter confirms he was in Ballaratt after 1861. I have details of siblings for Robert and his parents (John Gemmell and Mary Keir) if that helps anyone.

John and Mary married in 1833 and they had Robert (1836), Annie (1838), Margaret (1841), Agnes (1850) and Marion (1844). My direct connection is with Annie who was my great great grandmother but the fascination in the family has always been what happened to Robert when he went to Australia as the rest remained in Scotland.

Thanks for reading!
