Julius Oliver Eastwood, do you have a date of birth ?
He was born 1855 to Grace Gilfillan 1823-1882 and Alexander Eastwood 1831-1906. Alexander was a native Of Jamaica and a Reverend. Grace is of Irish heritage. They also had a daughter Amanda.
Julius was the licensee of the PAHIATUA 'UNION HOTEL' in 1894. He was away negotiating for the Kumeroa Hotel in Woodville in January that year when the FIRE occurred
May be easier if you tell us what info you have or what info you are looking for
a little more on Julius (you may have some or all of this)
* Julius arrived in Port Chalmers, Dunedin 8 Nov 1876 on the 'White Eagle'
* he was a member of the Timaru Volunteer corps in 1879 and was arrested for inciting about 100 men to riot against a brothel, trying to break it down, when they wouldn't give him his money back (made NZ-wide headlines that one lol)
* in 1883 he was in Cambridge, Waikato when he charged his de facto, Elizabeth Bates, with stealing his sewing machine, 4 bed sheets, 5 pillows, 2 pairs of blankets, 2 toilet cover, 2 white sheets, 1 pair of trousers, 3 chairs, a meat safe, a table, bedstead, mattress, window curtain and other household articles whilst he was looking for work in Piako. She was caught in Auckland and they eventually decided to share the goods
* in 1891 he was in Aohanga, on the east coast, 75km from Pahiatua
* in June 1892 he (& Mrs Eastwood) took over the Star Hotel in Masterton from E. J. Searle. He got into all sorts of trouble for selling alcohol after hours, on a Sunday and for not paying wages. His license for that hotel was taken off him in Aug 1893
* in 1894 he was in Pahiatua with the Union Hotel as above
* in 1898 he was in Tongaporutu, Taranaki
* in 1900 he was still in Taranaki when charged with 3 months rent arrears
* in 1901 he was in Taranaki when charged with assaulting R. H. Newman
* in 1902 his application for land was approved for section 3, block 4, 118 acres at Mimi, north Taranaki
* in 1905 Mrs Eastwood wanted to exempt part of this land for forest preservation. In Dec that year Julius was growing potatoes on the land at Tongaporutu as his father did in the West Indies
Yes I knew about all that from papers past. I just can't seem to find any record of his death. I have already looked in BDM New Zealand.
My grandfather Ernest Alexander must have been about 9 years old when Julius's wife (Ernest's mother) died in 1909. I cannot find any info on her death either eg: Where buried or cremated.
you're welcome
Sorry :-) Thanks heaps for that
It is very frustrating doing my tree. Jamaica didn't have records or the ones they did were destroyed.
I can't understand how there is no record of Julius's death in New Zealand unless of course he left.
I will have to start searching overseas I suppose.
