Elmer Samuel Bassett from Iowa

Question by Lizard7

Elmer S. Bassett is my GGrandfather. My mother gave me his "original" Certificate of Naturalization. It shows that his former nationality was British. I applied through the Freedom of Information act and received his application. (Copies very hard to read). He states that he was born near Sandyville, Iowa. His father was born in Ohio and his mother was born in Indiana. I have his delayed birth certificate where he states that he was born in Iowa.

My question is why would he have to apply for citizenship in the United States if he was born here and already a U.S. citizen?

Any help is appreciated. :)

Am I right in thinking this is your Elmer Samuel Bassett ? He must have married twice. If it is the right Elmer have you check where his parents were born.

Did Elmer leave the USA at any time to say Canada or England. When was the Certificate of Naturalization issued. Have you checked for entry into the USA. The only thing I can think is he could not prove he was already a USA national. Could he have applied for the Certificate to prove who he was ie like a passort to leave the USA.

Yes, my GGrandfather was married twice. His first wife Ester Metcald and his second wife was Ila Berthenia Lukenbill. He did live in Canada and both him and his father had some land. They did not got to England and as far as I know there were no children born outside of the United States.
