Evening Post, 10 July 1933
DIAMOND WEDDING It is sixty years since Mr. and Mrs. William Evetts, of New Plymouth, were married in Wellington (states the 'Taranaki Herald'). Now, at the respective ages of 82 and 80 years, both are still hale and hearty. A family gathering was held during the weekend in honour of the auspicious occasion of the couple’s diamond wedding. Both Mr and Mrs Evetts (Martha Carvell in those days) were born in the little village of Southam, Warwickshire, England. They grew up together, being boy and girl sweethearts. Mr Evetts was in the employ of the great English engineering firm of Brogdens, with whom Sir Julius Vogel, then Premier of New Zealand, contracted for the construction of the Dominion’s railways. Mr Evetts came out to New Zealand in the ship Halcione, which arrived at Wellington on July 29, 1872. On the same vessel came Miss Carvell, the couple being married about a year after their arrival in New Zealand. There were 13 children of the marriage, of whom nine are still living. These are: Mrs R. Gardner (New Plymouth), Mrs W. Horne (New Plymouth), Mrs D. Williams (Rahotu), Mrs A. Standring (New Plymouth), Mrs J. Harnett (New Plymouth), Messrs Frank Evetts (New Plymouth), Albert 'Mick' (New Plymouth), Carvell (Okaiawa), Harold (New Plymouth). There are 15 grandchildren and seven great-grand children. A grandson and great granddaughter are resident in Suva
