Family from Kent, England.

My grandfather and grandmother immigrated to New Zealand from Kent, England in 1960. I am researching their family,for anyone with links to these families you possibly have alot of family here in New Zealand that you may not have known about!
My Grandfathers family surnames were: Bishop, Chandler, Palmer. Anyone with these names in their tree? I have alot of names for the Palmers side and a few for Chandlers yet the Bishops name seems to end at my Great Grandfather.
My Grandmothers family surnames: Henwood and Harris. Their was a marriage to a Hodson and maybe a Brennan. My grandmothers Uncle married a lady named Violet Cooke. The uncles name is unknown though.
From what i have seen while researching is that their are alot of these names that circulated the Kent area, i just can't seem to get a link to the people i know! Any help would be great.

allycat on 2007-01-04 20:05:54Dear C_Bishop, Hi there. It is easy to become frustrated when researching one's genealogy. But you will just have to do it step by step. Start with yourself and work backwards.
I highly recommend purchasing birth, death and marriage certificates for direct main line ancestors only, i.e. grandparents, great grandparents, etc. and only obtain certs for siblings of grandparents/great grandparents if asbolutely necessary. Sometimes they have more info but they are only as good as the information known to the informants, especially Death Certificates.
My mother-in-law has lots of HARRIS ancestors that emigrated to New Zealand, and I have and will provide all that I know on that surname.
Perhaps you could write a journal on each family group stating all the known information, that way you will cover all your family tree.
Please think about how you are going to store all your family tree information because I have a feeling that within 6 months time you will have accumulated a great deal of data.
For instance, I have my family tree posted online at GenesReunited but this costs me $20/year and I never knew about TribalPages before, as it is a FREE site.
You can also store your family tree data in a free software package called Personal Ancestral File available from Family Search. Also see their tips on the right-hand side - getting started with family history.

No sorry he didn't, i have gained alot of info on his family since posting this journal, and Alfred died in 1965. Alfred's son was the first to come to NZ.
Gosh you weren't kidding from your first msg that i am going to need something to record all data! i have just ordered some family tree software as i have too much paperwork lying everywhere! Oh and that roots.chat is fantastic!

I'm quite happy to use Personal Ancestral File (PAF) which I downloaded free from the Mormon website - LDS church FamilySearch. With genealogy it's easy to start spending big bucks when you don't have to.
And yeah, rootschatters are great hey? Also there's a whole lot more people out there, worldwide - search here for link on random acts of genealogical kindnesses.
